A wonderful glass of wine, juicy, controlled, restrained, fragrant, enticing. The tannins are cashmere smooth, waves of crushed raspberries and wild strawberries fill the mouth, and this is easy to fall in love with. Fine tannins, blackberry and cranberry fruits, softly sweet while retaining grip and power. 21ha of vines. Caroline Frey owner and winemaker. Gregory Joannes-Hurst director.

Gorgeous fragrant nose, fully melted tannins, silky and seductive, gingerbread, white pepper, incense, soy, umami, undergrowth, smoked earth, freshly sliced white truffle, crushed roses. tobacco, fragrant and lace-like tannins. Fully in its drinking window, definite tertiary character. Clear deposit so ensure a carafe, opened three hours before tasting.

Lukt av bjørnebær, blåbær og most plomme med et lite syrlig preg i retning bringebær. I tillegg er det pepper, lær, tobakk, blodig kjøtt, sopp og oliven.

På smak er det en fin miks av tørket og solmoden frukt med krydder, blomster og animalske toner. Mye å hente ut fra vinen og nydelig variasjon i smakskurven. Vinen er saftig og livlig med en fin balanse mellom nytt og gammelt. Ettersmaken sitter veldig lenge. Tapte seg 30 minutter etter åpning.

When Caroline Frey took over in 1996, Jancis Robinson had just published an article called The Rise and Fall of La Chapelle, pointing out the many issues that had befallen this iconic name in the previous decade. Bottle variation may definitely be an issue, but this 1990 - tasted during a recent vertical of the estate at 67 Pall Mall club in London - was glorious, and the wine of the night for me. Silky soft tannins, melted into the structure but still offering a graceful hold to the softly spoken spiced blackberry fruits. Hard to believe but even at 33 years old it takes time to fully open, getting better in the glass.
