Medium intensity ruby red, fresh on-the-edge-of-ripe redcurrant and blueberry fruits, rose stems, tomato leaf, struggling right now to soften the tannic architecture.

Inside Bordeaux

The 2022 Haut-Bergey Rouge is deep garnet-purple in color. The nose is slightly muted, with suggestions of stewed plums and black cherry compote giving way to hints of unsmoked cigars and damp soil. The medium to full-bodied palate delivers a tart line, with chewy tannins to support the dried berry flavors, finishing slightly rustic.

An estate that offers great value wines in Pessac, one to look out for, but it struggles in the vintage. There are black and blue fruits here, but they skirt full ripeness, with angular tannins.

Austere on the opening, both Petit Verdot and Malbec dominant in the construction of the tannins and the dark cassis and bilberry fruits. Expect waves of tight crayon and orange peel. Demeter certified estate from the Garcin family, 18hl/ha yield after mildew, ageing in 300i barrels and 3,000l oak casks.

The 2019 Haut-Bergey Rouge is deep garnet-purple in color. Baked plums, juicy blackberries, and wild sage waft from the glass followed by hints of pencil lead and crushed rocks. The medium to full-bodied palate is refreshing and uncomplicated, with a chewy finish.

The 2018 Haut-Bergey has a deep garnet purple color. It gives up notes of baked cherries and stewed plums, with hints of tobacco, balsamic, and tapenade. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has well sustained, savory flavors and a chewy texture, finishing earthy. 

The 2013 Haut-Bergey has a medium garnet-brick color. It wafts from the glass with notes of dried plums, fruitcake, and sauteed herbs, with hints of unsmoked cigars and sweaty leather. Medium-bodied, the palate is chewy and lively, with just enough fruit and an herbal finish.

The 2012 Haut-Bergey Rouge is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot. Medium to deep garnet colored, it has a fragrant nose of kirsch, juicy plums, and cassis with hints of cumin seed, star anise, and fragrant earth. The light-bodied palate is bright and refreshing, with fine-grained tannins and a perfumed finish.

Good quality, ready to drink, brambled orange peel and cut herbs, cherry puree with plenty of cocoa and campfire smoke, but the alcohol is a little overly apparent, and it closes things down on the end of play.

Old school, cheerful, enjoyable, ready to drink, supple tannins, unfussy. This was released to strong scores initially, and it has plenty to recommend, but I wouldn't suggest holding it in a cellar for much longer, very much in its drinking window.

This was scored pretty well at the time, seen as one of the values of the vintage, and it has just about held on, but the real pleasure will have come in its first decade. At this point there is bricking to the colour around the edges, with touches of soy, wood smoke and blond toboacco on the nose. Starts out well, with charming blackberry puree, but there just isn't enough fruit to carry it through the palate. Vignobles Garcin, 50% new oak.
