A blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 48% Merlot, and 2% Petit Verdot, the medium to deep garnet-purple colored 2023 Chateau Brown is a little shy to start with reluctant notes of cedar and charcoal leading to a core of black raspberries and redcurrants, plus a touch of wild sage. The medium-bodied palate is soft and approachable, with a good amount of pure, red berry flavor and a mineral lift on the finish.

Inside Bordeaux

The 2021 Chateau Brown has a deep garnet-purple color. It is a little closed to start, opening out to notes of redcurrants and juicy plums, with dried sage and wet slate in the undercurrent. Medium-bodied, the palate is soft and refreshing with bright, expressive fruit and a lifted finish.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2020 Brown Rouge opens with classic cassis, juicy plums, and cedar scents leading to hints of dried flowers and unsmoked cigars. The full-bodied palate is packed with juicy black fruits, supported by soft tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing fruity.

The smooth, silky tannins of Pessac-Léognan, well handled to accentuate the damson and black cherry fruits, set against pencil lead and slate. Another successful vintage at this property, owned by Jean-Christophe Mau. I chose it as one of my top 30 2018s to open now, and equally here you have a wine that will be ready within a few years, although the acidities are a little more pronounced than in 2018. 45% new oak, 42hl/ha yield. Harvest September 25 to October 14. An upscore from En Primeur.

This hits all the right spots for early drinking with rich, supple damson fruits and a ton of graphite and black chocolate nuance. Will be even better a year from now, or after a good few hours in a carafe, but this is pure Pessac-Léognan, with tannins that are soft enough to showcase the generous fruits without needing years of ageing. 30% new oak.

Supple tannins, this kicks off with a lovely brambled fruit character, grilled sandalwood and soft tar along with cheerful damson and black cherry. Good quality, oak a little intrusive but there is plenty to enjoy here, and it is ready to drink.

Encapsulates the welcome and warmth of the vintage with its figs and damson fruits, ripples of cocoa dusted cherries, with grilled vanilla bean. Ready to drink, a touch of glamour, melted tannins.

Raspberry red colour, tawny edged, dried roses and smoked earth. In its tertiary phase, this is a world away from the Château Brown of today, and is beginning to soften. If you have this, open now and you might be pleasantly surprised - ideal from magnum if possible. 40% new oak, Stephane Derenoncourt consultant.
