Beautiful red ruby expression. A slimmer more finessed expression of Calon than in recent years, that gives it less estate signature than some, but this has beautiful cassis bud, rose petals,  peony, iris, cocoa bean and graphite. Subtle but with real charm. 3.60 pH. 45 hl/ha. 100% new oak. Vincent Millet director, Harvest 23 September to 9 October. 

Inside Bordeaux

A blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot, the 2023 Calon Segur has a deep garnet-purple color. After a swirl or two, notes of fresh blackcurrants, juicy blackberries, and redcurrant jelly leap from the glass, followed by hints of rose oil, cumin seed, and mint tea. The medium to full-bodied palate is bursting with bold red and black fruit flavors, supported by fine-grained tannins, finishing long and spicy. Nicely done!

This is powerful, underlining how much last year's more softly sculpted wine was a departure from recent vintages of Calon, and back in my mind to the complicated 2018 vintage, where it was overly marked by the heat of the vintage. This is full on concentrated fruit, with strong tannins that build through the palate. Plenty of complexity with black truffles, cassis, olive paste, sandalwood and fresh mint on the finish, along with cloves and cinnammon spice. 3.8ph, 100% new oak, 26hl/h yields. 53% Grand Vin, higher than usual. Vincent Millet technical director. Harvest September 6 to 27.

Maintains the clarity and precision that it showed En Primeur, with finely cut tannins, cassis fruits and bitter black chocolate. Savoury and finessed, grilled sandalwood and cocoa bean. Good stuff, understated but refined. Harvest September 28 to October 14, 100% new oak, 43% 1st wine, 36hl/h yield. Old school finesse, not exuberance. Director Vincent Millet.

2020 fortsetter å imponere også dette slottet. Dyp purpur farge med en enorm delikat og kompleks duft av mørke bær, plomme, vanilje, lakris, røyk etc. En vidunderlig smaks intensitet med laang balansert ettersmak selv om tannin strukturen er fremtredende.
Dette er super flott og blir nok vidunderlig om 5-25 år🥰

Rich and silky in texture, full of ripe brambled fruits and powerfully concentrated tannins. Touch of reduction on the first nose that needs time to clear, lots to enjoy and it unquestionably makes an impression. Plenty of signature St Estèphe punch. The 2018 Calon Segur is deep garnet-purple in color. It has a powerful nose of crème de cassis, boysenberry preserves, and mocha, with an undercurrent of cedar, tar, and star anise. Full-bodied, rich and decadent it the mouth, it has a solid frame of ripe, grainy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing long and earthy. Needs five more years, at least, but is shping up to be a real head-turner.

Intense and elegant nose with fine layers of new oak, tobacco, high ripeness, yet a good sense of freshness with black currant, cherry, tobacco and earthy notes. Very dense and fresh palate with nice proportions between power and freshness. Grainy tannin, gentle roasted oak and layers of digest dark fruit. Long and vigorous finish, very promising.

Captures the texture and power of great St Estèphe, with aromatic fragrant spice, blueberry and cassis fruit, and has plenty of joy to deliver. Great quality at the ten year point, just about ready to drink at this point but decades ahead. Crushed roses on the finish, lighter framed than the 2016 but this is a lovely wine. 100% new oak for ageing. Vincent Millet director.

Medium to deep garnet in color, the 2014 Calon Segur gallops out with classic notes of cigar box, cassis, and graphite plus nuances of leather and dried leaves. The medium-bodied palate is tightly wound and minerally, with impressive tension and a chewy finish.

The 2013 Calon Segur is medium garnet in color, with a touch of brick. It has quite an oaky nose to begin, offering glimpses at underlying notes of dried cherries, fruitcake, and rosemary, with a touch of iron ore. The medium-bodied palate is dominated by oak and herbal flavors, with a firm texture and a short finish.

Dark berries, mineral and floral notes, dense structure, plenty of dark fruit, fine spice, tobacco, very long with plenty of fine tannin, promising!

The Denise Gasqueton years, and this is very much old school and very much delicious. Bursting with black chocolate, charcoal, crayon, campfire, cassis, bilberries, rose buds, bay leaf. This is pure Calon and you just want to pour yourself inside it. 100% new oak.

Plum colour, still intense right through to the core of the wine, this is just a near-perfect St Estèphe, concentrated yet finessed, with balance, less muscular than you would find in most vintages of Calon today, still with depth but also nuance, full of pleasure and joy, cocoa bean, cigar box, blackcurrant, smoked earth, oyster shell finish. Owned by Denise Gasqueton at the time, and makes me a little nostalgic for the old school charms of this era at Calon.

The classic Gasqueton years, when Calon was for the initiated, and they held on fervently to their insider status. Beautiful ruby red colour, rapsberry puree and cocoa dusting aromatics, still young, a wonderfully embracing tannic frame, rapsberrry, blueberry and loganberry fruits, slate-scraping minerality, just a gorgeous wine that is bursting out of the glass and still has so much more to give. Balanced, mouthwatering, persistent, just at the start of its long and pleasure-filled life, showcasing so much that is wonderful about 2005. Get on board. This is a 2 point higher score than the last time I tasted in April 2021, reflecting that the 2005s are just right now beginning to open up. 50% new oak.

Mye som stemmer i denne Bordeuaxen; kjølig, ren, rød kirsebærfrukt, et noe utviklet preg, hovedsakelig kommer det frem i form av integrerte tanniner og balanse. Ørlite «grå» frukt trekker ned fra det som nesten er en spektakulær vin. En perfekt match til medium rarereinsdyr med en fruktig saus.

At a lovely moment to drink, capturing the vibrant core of St Estèphe black fruits, muscular tannins, with fresh mint-leaf and eucalypytus acidities just as they tip towards tertiary. This is ageing slowly but surely, with the old school charm of Calon Ségur at this period, a touch of iron filings alongside crème caramel, black truffle, smoked earth and raspberry puree, all leisurely unfolding and stretching out the experience. Rebottled ten years ago (at the estate, where it has never left), opened and carafed four hours before serving.

Transparent ruby with a brown rim. Delicate nose with violets, leather, herbs, sweet sour cherries, licorice, pencil shavings, dates and figs. Fresh acidity. Playful. Spice, leather, tobacco and minerals. Polished smooth tannins. Very long.

This was a challenging vintage for reds (great for Sauternes if you were wondering), but there is still plenty of life and lift in this lovely bottle. Cigar box, soft raspberries, old books, tobacco, classic old claret, you can't help but feel just how few places in the world can deliver this sense of unhurried, languid pleasure in a 56 year old wine.

A beautiful wine, that tasted stunningly fresh, with blackberry, loganberry and crushed raspberry fruits, still deep in colour with fine tannins holding them in place. Campfire, tobacco, undergrowth and saffron come in waves as the palate unwinds, this is delicious, a wine that you miss as soon as it is finished. Opened and stood for four hours before being served, then carafed for 30 minutes. This bottle has never been recorked, but remained in the same spot in the Calon cellars since bottling in 1968.

Soft raspberry in colour, gentle dusky pink around the edges, this is delicate and fragrant, if served blind you might think 1959 rather than the more muscular 1961, definitely at the stage where even Cabernet Sauvignon takes on the personality of Pinot Noir with its finely boned tannins and floral fragrance, with tobacco, soot and crushed roses. Lives up to the breathless expectations that go along with any opening of a classified 1961, although I wouldn't bet on it lasting as long from here as either the Mouton or the Latour. Half bottle. Stored in an underground cellar in the Netherlands, kept in OWC until a recent auction and transported to Hong Kong. Half bottle.

Incredibly young, to the point that some of the (experienced) tasters around the table thought it was younger than the 1966 - I guessed it to be late 1950s, early 1960s. The colour remains deep and powerful, with heady scents of crushed roses and mandarin rind. It is only on the palate that you feel the tobacco, leather, white truffle and bare bones tannins of an older wine, but even so it is breathing beauty, with the remembrance of atumnal fruit that gently builds in density through the palate. An extraordinary wine - that we had out of magnum. Even more incredibly, it had never been recorked, but had remained in the exact same spot in the Calon cellars since it was first bottled in 1928. How long will it last? Hard to say - clearly it has already shown any 'drink to' date to be meaningless, and seems determined to keep defying gravity. Opened five hours before service (but I would suggest less if you are having from bottle). The exact blend is unknown, but at the time plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon in the vineyard were extremely high.
