Deep garnet-purple colored. Fresh plums and raspberry scents stroll easily from the glass, followed by nuances of rose bud tea, tilled soil, and unsmoked cigars. The light to medium-bodied palate is soft-spoken with lightly chewy tannins and seamless freshness, finishing minerally.

A blend of 89% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2023 Gazin has a deep garnet-purple color. It is a touch subdued to begin, needing a little patience to discover subtle notes of redcurrant jelly, fresh plums, and cedar, leading to hints of pencil lead and bay leaves. The medium-bodied palate has fine-grained tannins and bright acidity supporting the delicate red and black fruit flavors, finishing with a savory lift. I like this quiet intensity!

Enjoyably brambled fruit on the nose, espresso and cocoa bean, well controlled, with supple tannins and plenty of raspberry and damson flavours, alongside firm tannic structure. 26hl/h yield, 50% new oak for ageing, 22ha vineyard, 37 year average age of vines. 

Inside Bordeaux

The 2021 Gazin is deep garnet-purple in color. After a little shaking, it wakes up to reveal notes of fresh blackberries and black raspberries plus hints of licorice, sassafras, and black truffle. The medium-bodied palate is plush and juicy, with well-knit freshness and a savory finish.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2020 Gazin strides confidently out of the glass with classic notes of baked black plums, blueberry compote, and tilled soil, followed by earthy nuances of mossy tree bark, tar, and black truffles. The full-bodied palate is laden with muscular black fruits, framed by velvety tannins and seamless freshness, finishing on a lingering fragrant earth note.

The 2019 Gazin is composed of 88.5% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 4.5% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple in color, it sashays out with a gorgeous perfume of raspberry pie, rose oil, and vanilla pod, giving way to a core of crushed blackberries, cast-iron pan, and truffles. The full-bodied palate has a sturdy frame of grainy tannins and plenty of freshness supporting the dense, muscular fruit, finishing earthy.

The 2018 Gazin has a deep garnet purple color. It starts off with scents of cedar, tobacco, and pencil lead, leading to baked blackberries and mulberries, with a waft of garrigue. Medium to full-bodied, it is soft and understated in the mouth, with an earthy finish.

Crayon, slate, graphite, brilliant texture, slow build through the palate, thoroughly enjoyable, the exuberance of the vintage measured by the signature restraint and reticence of Gazin and translating into liquorice, cigar box, cassis, bilberry and violets, just coming fully into its drinking window. Harvest September 10 to October 7, Nicolas de Baillencourt owner, 50% new oak barrels for ageing.

The 2014 Gazin is medium to deep garnet-brick in color. Broody notes of wet slate and wild mushrooms open out to a core of prunes and raisin cake plus a medicinal waft in the background. The medium-bodied palate is chewy, with just enough remaining fruit and a rugged texture, finishing a tad firm.

The 2013 Gazin has a medium garnet color, with a touch of brick. Notions of fig cake and incense lead to a core of prunes and old leather, with a touch of crushed rocks. Medium-bodied, the palate is rather skeletal, with a chewy texture and a lively backbone paving the way to the short finish.

Medium to deep garnet colored, the 2012 Gazin offers mature notes of mince pie, coffee grounds, and tobacco over a core of stewed plums and incense. The full-bodied palate is firm and chewy, with just enough freshness to support the dense fruit through the long, decadent finish.

The 1990 vintage in Bordeaux is really great on both the left and the right bank. Now they are quite mature and often in a very good stage for drinking.

Gazin is from Pomerol and mainly dominated by the merlot grape. A splendid estate I have had the pleasure of visiting several times.
