Savoury and juicy, this is full of crushed rose petals, generosity of spirit even if it shows the austerity of the vintage, wrapped by bitter chocolate, cloves and spiced rosemary. Slate texture, delicious and understated, with clear ageing capacity. 3.71ph,give a good eight to ten years before drinking. Harvest 23 September to 5 October. 3.71 pH. 100% new oak.

High Cabernet, and the grape is dominant not just in blend but character, totally delicious, with tension, flesh, and confidence, building layers of black fruits, graphite, cocoa bean, espresso, pomegranate and smoked earth throughout the palate. When Cabernet works at Mouton, it is hard to beat, and it's on full display in 2023. One of my clear wines of the vintage. Of any vintage. 100% new oak for ageing. 40% grand vin, harvest September 7 to 30.

The 2022 Mouton Rothschild, 92% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Merlot, is aging in 100% new oak. Deep garnet-purple in color, it is incredibly closed to start off, needing a lot of shaking to wake up subtle notes of blackcurrant jelly, ripe blackberries, and fresh mulberries, leading to hints of espresso, crushed rocks, iris bulb, and star anise. Compared with the nose, the mouth wows with explosive, intense flavors of cassis, black cherries, and licorice that fill the palate, framed by very firm, beautifully ripe tannins and a lively backbone, finishing very long with mineral and floral sparks. It is amazing how classical this Mouton this is, considering the extreme vintage. A legend in the making. pH 3.89, TPI 76.

A blend of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, and 1% Cabernet Franc, the 2021 Mouton Rothschild has a deep garnet-purple color. It is very closed to start, slowly unfurling to reveal notes of ripe black plums, blackcurrant pastilles, licorice, and cedar chest, followed by hints of dark chocolate and iron ore, with a fragrant touch of violets. The medium-bodied palate is tight-knit, with great tension and ripe, fine-grained tannins framing the electrically charged black fruit and mineral flavors, finishing long and perfumed. It tingles on the palate!

Intense, concentrated, powerful, deeply spiced, fleshy but restrained, this inches open and feels vibrant, pure, chiselled, seamless, with an electric charge. Expect plenty of smoked and grilled cassis, bilberry and damson fruits, sandalwood and mint leaf. Has the 2020 signature where flavours are classically serious and balanced but intense, just a monumental Mouton with the freshness and architecture of 2016, edged with floral aromatics, wonderfully enticing and with presence. 100% new oak. First vintage for Jean-Emmanuel Danjoy as director, following Philippe Dhalluin's retirement. One of the wines of the vintage.

I'm not alone in considering this one of the all-time great Moutons - it was awarded World's Greatest Wine is a competition last year that saw numerous rounds of blind tasting. It's worth your while to find out why - this is a powerhouse of beautiful fruits - layer upon concentrated layer of blackberry, cassis, liquorice, baked earth, cigar box, black truffle and the signature smoked and grilled spices of Mouton. The tannins are velvety but determined, holding on to their fruit with no intention of letting go for another few decades. 100% new oak. There is the tiniest touch of Petit Verdot in the blend but under 1% so it’s not in the official figures. 62% of production went into the grand vin. 3.78pH. 88IPT. The artist for this vintage is Xu Bing.

Rich and vibrant ruby in colour with violet reflections at 8 years old. This was a warm and generous vintage, and this stunning wine can trick you into believing that it is remarkably approachable already, until the supple but plentiful tannins begin their slow build through the palate. Ripe with blackberry and damson fruit, cocoa bean, toasted sandalwood and fragrant crushed rose aromatics, this takes the architecture and power of Pauillac and gives it lyrical depths. I would resist the tempation to open now, and allow the slow unroll of First Growth complexity to continue for another decade or so. 11% press wine, Philippe Dhalluin technical director, Eric Boissenot consultant. 100% new oak.

The grilled character on the opening beats is more campfire than gunsmoke, just a little warmer and more evident than with the Lafite, meaning both estates are very much staying true to their character. Here you get waves of peony and rose petals, with raspberry and damson fruits, feels expansive and complex, punctuated by orange peel, pomegranate, leather, espresso, black tea, sweet smoked caramel, with plenty of lift and caressting tannins. Delicious, and growing into a spectacular wine as it ages. 100% new oak, Philippe Dhalluin director.

Medium garnet in color, the 2013 Mouton Rothschild gallops out with energetic notes of blackcurrant jelly, kirsch, and prunes, leading to suggestions of wild fungi, dusty soil, and charcuterie. The mediuml-bodied palate is packed with black fruit layers, framed by amazing tension and fine, ripe tannins, finishing long and earthy. This is very nicely done!

Medium to deep garnet colored, the 2012 Mouton Rothschild gallops out with bold, energetic notes of warm cassis, blackberry preserves, and sandalwood, leading to hints of underbrush, charcuterie, and cedar chest. Medium-bodied, the palate has a taut structure of grainy tannins and seamless freshness supporting the muscular fruit, finishing very long and lifted.

This is pure pleasure, with tiny pulses of electricity, brushed leather, sulphur, loam, truffle, blackberry, black cherry, with touches of silky tannins, smoked caramel and black chocolate. A wine that makes you smile, so much depth and power, barely out of its primary phase, but we are starting now to get the whole picture of what it will become. There is a lush edge to the tannins now that was not the case even two years ago. Such a different expression from the 2009 and 2010 Mouton, with this a little more old school in its charms, and for me you can now project yourself foraward, more like the 1986, a little dry and strict at first, but finessed and gorgeous, delivering grip, punch and magic. Eric Tourbier and Philippe Dhalluin on the technical team. 63% first wine, extremely low for the time (lowest since 1975, whereas today they are regularly below 50%). If you are going to open this anytime soon, think of it as a bottle to enjoy very slowly over four or five hours seeing the nuances develop. 100% new oak.

Solbær, mørk plumme, tobakk, bladværk, grus, og tre. Nesen er rik, mørk fruktig og moden. Noe utviklet og krydret, men åpen og tilgjengelig. 
Smaken er ren og fruktig ved ankomst, tørr og fine tanniner som en noe ubalansert i midt til fine tanniner som er balansert med bær og tørket frukt i avslutning. 
76% cab, 14% merlot, 2% P Verdot.

WSET Diploma

The 2001 is an amazing vintage that has inched forwards over the past 20 years, still muscular although always more elegant in its tannic frame than the 2000 vintage before it. I served it out of magnum, and if wines of the year are about emotions, this definitely deserves to be among them. I was given this bottle back in 2011 when I won the Prix Baron Philippe de Rotshchild for my first book Bordeaux Legends, and I have kept it safely at home ever since. Honestly I should probably have waited another decade, as it was still young, but I had something special to celebrate, good friends coming over, and it seemed like the right moment. Definitely needs time in a carafe, but as it opened up, the creamy blackberry and cassis fruits began to show the traditional Mouton welcome, and coffee and woodsmoke curled out of the glass alongside grilled cedar and liqourice root. Amateur

En veldig ren og balansert Bordeaux - virker dirkkeklar, men med et godt videre langringspotensiale. Skogsbær, mintsjokolade. Lang. Pur frukt! 

Noe paprika, stikkelsbær, grønne urter og saftige syrlige bær. Fremstår fremdeles veldig fersk, lite lagringsaroma. Lang+

The only one of today's First Growths that was in the same family hands in 1855 as today, with Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild arriving in 1853. The story becomes even more interesting because in 1855 Nathaniel could only complain (and he did) as Mouton was placed at the head of the Second Growths. Looking specifically at the wine in front of us here, generally these 1995s are more charming but less concentrated than the 1996s, and can be a real surprise. Showing waves of creamy black cherry, cinnamon, turmeric, tobacco and orange peel, this is understated and moreish, and was a quiet winner among the tasters. Fargen skulle ikke tilsi at det er snakk om årgang ‘93 her. Altså: åpenbart ikke en 2 år gammel pinot, men fortsatt ikke noen åpenbar oksidering mot murstein eller/og oransje kant. Likevell noe vannete kant. Gir jeg mening? Nei. Kan skylde på lyset. Noe bunnfall såklart, forsiktig dekantert vekk. 

Åpner fresht. Overraskende ungt. Modne moreller, søt cigar og tranebærjuice. Luft gir rom for tydelig sedertre, grafitt og tart cherry. Solbær fra hagen. Kompleks, lang, balansert, raffinert, konsentrert, fyldig, Digg. Stor D. Stor Vin. Ørlite meaty i munnen. Krydret med timian og laurbærblad. Off så godt…

Angrer ikke et sekund på at jeg tok en ekstravakt på jobb idag. Det er ikke hardt å være en hvit mann på treogtyve med navnet Henning på matmagasinet i tyvetyvefire. 

Herrejeremiah for en lengde, den vare langt forbi ramblinga og bablinga og oraldiaréinga mi om <3cl med vin. Freebird-solo-lengde. Tror kjelleren som 63-åring skal bli fin om kjellermesteren som 23-åring ordna fin vin som tåle tidens tann. 

91?-92

Smakte 90 og 92. 92 mye kjøligere og yngre i stilen enn 90 som gir mer av utviklet aroma som lær og tobakk. 

Duft av mørke, søte bringebær, søtlig tobakk, vintage sigarboks, kaffe, hvit sjokolade, Oliver twist.

Smak av mørke bringebær, og søt, lys lakris. Brede tanniner, høy syre, ok konsnetrasjon, ok lengde. Mer fremtredende på nesen enn på paleten.

Magnum: kjølig og stram årgang - presis solbærfrukt, tobakk, sigarboks - ren og vedefinert med støvete tanniner (93+)

Ruby red with a garnet rim. Lovely nose with violets, cassis, blueberries, eucalyptus, leather and minerals. Clean and pure. Fresh acidity. Leather, blueberries, cassis and mimerals. Detailed, velvety and delicate. Layered with new aromas every time. Powerful, but polished tannins. Very very long.

Drink from now until 2060?

How good can a wine get? Well, this is about as good as wine gets. The perfect score is 100/100p and I do not hand that out often.

I have tasted the 1986 Château Mouton Rothschild once before some years ago, and it is just as amazing now as it was them. If not better. Anyone else that likes a good Bordeaux wine or have you tasted Mouton Rothschild?

It still young (interesting for a wine that is 36 years young...) and need a few hours of decanting today.

Klassisk bdx nese, lover mye på nesen, fin syre men litt svak frukt. Litt hulere enn forventet i midten av smakskurven. Integrerte tannniner. Har nok vært bedre før denne flasken

perfekt moden - en studie i blyantaromaer, sigarboks, lær og kirsebær. Rund, polerte tanniner, balansert, frisk nok - høy fruktsødme - mangler intensiteten til 82, men gir mye drikkeglede (94)

Denne ved siden av 1945 var lærerikt. Søte solbær mot 45s mer kjølige uttrykk - på finish ikke ulike - mer potente tanniner i 82, men 82 bør åpnes nå og over de neste 30 år - den blir ikke bedre, bare annerledes (99+)

Bra fyllnivå og korken i overaskende bra tilstand. Noe frukt å spore, elegant, føles ren og fin. Holdt seg i live i flere timer etter åpning. God drikke, men ingen stor opplevelse. 

Bordeaux leverer her også. Den er noe flatere enn sine andre søsken fra Premier Grand Cru Classé klassifikasjonen vi drikker denne kvelden.

Fargen er mørk rød med brunlig kant og tradisjonelle noter fra Bordeaux på nesen. Lær, røde frukter og noe tobakk. Litt flat i smaksbildet, men komplett og flott slik det ofte blir fra en topprodusent.

Fortsatt god frukt med en god duft rett etter åpning. Falt rask etter ca 20 min i glasset. 
En fantastisk god vin

Mørkmørk brun farge. Var redd når korken smuldret opp med durand. 
Startet uten lukt, helte rett i glass. Tynn brun saus med lite liv.
Etter 10-15 minutter kom det smaker av frukt, mørke bær. Åpningen var helt rå. 
Helt fantastisk opplevelse. 
1973 var året Mouton fikk first growth status. Motivet er hyllest til Picasso.

Holdt seg forbausende bra, selv om dette ikke er verdens beste vin.
Sømløs vin med frukt fortsatt intakt.
Bra lengde med pulveriserte tanniner.

Ganske kraftig i aroma. Noe varm frukt med plomme,solbærtoddy krydder. Videre til seder,toast og noe floral.
Høy intensitet med høy syre men utrolig godt balansert.
Mye av det samme bildet på smak som aroma men i litt avslipt intensitet.
Flott vin med flott lengde.

Fin rødfarge med murstein og brunlig i kanten.
Ganske fremtreden kjeller i anslaget,men forsvant like fort. Over til seder,sigarboks,jordlig og noe mineraler. Overraskende pigg frukt med noe plomme og solbær. 
Flott konsentrasjon med helt helt avslipte og raffinerte tanniner. God lengde.
Nydelig vin som antagelig nærmer seg toppen hvis ikke den er der nå allerede.

This vintage came 12 years before Mouton Rothschild was promoted to First Growth in 1973, and it clearly shows that it was already more than equalling its future siblings. Still rich ruby in colour, a touch earthy on first aromatics but settles quickly in the glass, and as it opens it transforms into a gorgeous finessed glass with peony and crushed rose aroamtics, gentle cigar box, campfire, black truffle and sofly-spoken brambled fruits. Fine tannins remain engaged, and this wine still has plenty to say. The bottle that I had ex-cellar from Mouton at the end of 2023 was just a little more concentrated, so inevitably storage comes into play with bottles of this age, but it's a delighful. Baron Philippe de Rothschild at the helm, with a stunning black, red and gold label by Georges Mathieu.

Blyantkvess, cedertre, leire, svart te, meget pen og ren nese, på smak, medium tannin, modne og slør tannin, strukturert, høy konsentrasjon, deilig moden frukt, mot solbær. Svært lang. Intenst harmonisk.

Jern, blod, solbærbusk, ikke like aromatisk imponerende som 49 Latour, touch soya, blåpreget frukt, modne tanniner, imponerende ungdommelighet, ikke kompleksiteten til Latour, som den burde ha.

Kjøpt på Systembolaget i 1971 og deretter lagret i en jordkjeller. Perfekt kork som satt limt til flaskehalsen. «Kjølig» stil når den smakes ved siden av Mouton 1982 - solbær og solbærbusk - delikat og sublimt balansert - silketanniner - imponerende ren fruktkvalitet - meget lang - sjelden frukten oppleves som fast i en 76 år gammel vin

Magnum: fra en perfekt norsk kjeller - strukturert som en røff 1986 - kjølig solbærfrukt - pen syre - meget intens - burde vært dekantert 2 timer (96+)
