The 2003 The Inaugeral Syrah is the first vintage where all the Syrah comes from the Krankls’ Eleven Confessions Vineyard, although it does contain a splash (3%) of Viognier from Alban Vineyard. The wine spent 38.5 months in French oak barrels, 90% new. Deep garnet colored with a hint of brick in the rim, the nose is still very youthful, displaying scents of Morello cherries, raspberry preserves, and rose bud tea, leading to hints of anise, garrigue, and crushed rocks, with an emerging suggestion of tobacco. The full-bodied palate has wonderfully fine-grained tannins and great freshness to support the slowly evolving black and red berry flavors, finishing long and perfumed. 264 cases were made, plus one 27-liter bottle, one 15-liter bottle, and one 12-liter bottle.
