Saint-Emilion Grand Cru

A blend of 50% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc, and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2021 Petit-Figeac is deep garnet-purple in color. It scoots out of the glass with eager-to-please scents of raspberry coulis, crushed black cherries, and fresh boysenberries, leading to wafts of roses and wild sage, plus a hint of graphite. The medium-bodied palate has energetic red and black berry flavors, with soft tannins and a lively backbone, finishing long and minerally.

Attractive and enticing, expect a more savoury Petit Figeac in recent years, once again the vintage has a clear impact on the selection process, but in the best hands - as here, honed also by the new cellar - what it gives instead is delicacy and finesse. Emphasis on red cherry and brambled fruits, supple and fine tannins. 37hl/h yield, 30% new French oak for ageing, a good long harvest stretching from September 21 to October 19.

Inside Bordeaux

Rich and knitted down, needs time to aerate, black cherry, crayon, graphite. Great texture, slow progression through the palate, you could drink in a few years or keep for a decade. Highly successful, with estate signature. Harvest September 1 until 26 September, 20% new oak. 

A blend of 71% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2020 Petit-Figeac is deep garnet-purple in color. It sashays out with glamorous notes of crushed black and red cherries, mulberries, and rose petals, followed by hints of cinnamon toast, fragrant soil, and sandalwood. The medium-bodied palate is tightly wound with youthful red and black berry layers, complemented by minerally sparks and floral nuances, framed by fine-grained tannins, and finishing with a cheery lift. It is very classic and should age well!

Cloves and turmeric spices on the nose, this is full of flavour and juice. There is a precison to the spiced blackberry puree and blackcurrant fruits that runs right through the palate. A well-crafted 2nd wine that is full of life, if a little austere in its tannic structure right now. Will soften and fatten up more with another two or three years in bottle, and it's one to look out for. 30% new oak, 33hl/h yield.

Figeac has made a 2nd wine since 1945, and it is consistently one of the best in Bordeaux. This one feels like a wine to own, showing heaps of plush black and red fruit, liquorice, cocoa bean, cherry puree and a more savoury cherry pit, cloves, cocoa bean and juicy tannins. The 2018 2nd wines of big name estates are having a moment if our tastings this week are anything to go by, definitely worth looking out for.
