The 2009 Penfolds Grange included just 2% of Cabernet Sauvignon and has a medium to deep garnet-purple color. It gallops out with notes of prunes, raspberry preserves, and fruit cake, followed by hints of licorice, coffee beans, and cigar boxes. The full-bodied palate delivers lots of savory and mineral layers with well-knit acidity and with a slight, not unpleasant, chewiness to the texture, finishing savory.

Vibrant and concentrated black cherry and damson flavours, still young, edges of cigar box and sandalwood. There would have been a difference in the way the team worked with the tannins from a decade earlier, with a little barrel ferment and softer extraction methods (components were made at Magill still in the old basket press for the part of Grange that comes from this site). Inside Bordeaux

The 2019 Grange was released through the Place in March, and it is followed up just six months later by the 2020, reminding us all once again that this is just a great addition to the international wines coming out through the Bordeaux system. Seductive, smoky, pure distilled blackcurrant and crushed blueberries, dill, black tea, raspberry leaf, violet. Just a gorgeous wine, with presence and character, hard to argue with. First time on the Place for this knockout iconic wine. Expect layers upon layers of fragrant plum, raspberry, black cherry, sandalwood, red liqourice, raspberry leaf, cola, sandalwood, pomegranate, climbing slowly but surely through the palate. Kompleks duft av cedertre/eik, bjørnebær, blåbær, kirsebær, roser, tobakk, lær, sigarboks, bandasje, pepper og ganske mye mynte eller eukalyptus!
Dette er en stor vin (!) som har høy syre og en utrolig konsentrasjon og lengde! Vinen er balansert med en del integrerte tanniner og hele 14,5% alkohol som absolutt ikke merkes i smaken. Meget godt laget vin!

WSET 3

Amazingly dense and young in colour, this just stretches out in front of you. Dense, dark brambled blackberry and raspberry fruits, concentrated yet with lightness of touch, powerful but finely boned tannins, with waves of tobacco, sage and spice. Comes at you with grip and personality, one to get hold of and sink into. One of only seven Grange vintages with 100% Shiraz.

You might expect a vintage of this age to look more evolved than this, particularly one that is not recognised as a great Grange vintage, and yet it is vibrant and ready for action. 1989 was a very hot year, fully ripe, and it retains an edge of rubber and smoke reduction on the opening notes, needs a good carafe to really open up (which is different from having to carafe for sediment). Once it does, you get straight to cigar box, cinders, soot, blueberries, blackcurrant, raspberry puree, still stunning, with the spice of a hot year. Changed from Grange Hermitage in this year (in the following 1990 vintage, the cork says Grange Hermitage, while the label just says Grange). Peter Gago arrived in this vintage, at a time when the team was still working in a traditional manner, with a continous press used for extraction - a rougher method than today, and yet this is still firing on all cylinders, and is just a fabulous wine.
