The 2023 Pontet-Canet is deep garnet-purple in color. Notes of juicy blueberries, black cherries, and blackcurrant jelly spill from the glass, giving way to nuances of violets, black truffle, fertile loam, and mossy tree bark with a hint of cardamom. The medium-bodied palate is so, so silky, elegant, and fine, with perfumed black and blue fruit layers and beautiful tension, finishing long with lots of shimmery mineral and floral sparkles. The blend is 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot, aged in 50% new oak, 35% amphorae, and 15% used barrels. With an alcohol this year of just 13.8%, this is a beautifully poised, tightly packed powerhouse that promises to keep the firework displays bedazzling collectors for many years to come.

Smak av bjørnebær, skogsbær og blåbær. Den jordlige, plantasje-bark aktige delen følger også på smak. Utrolig mørk og sammensatt, samtidig veldig kjølig, til tross for en veldig varm årgang. Veldig heftig primærfrukt og høy fruktsødme. En veldig passende syre. 

En av de bedre Pontet Canet’ene jeg har smakt.

Deep garnet-purple colored. Strolls confidently out of the glass with notes of ripe, juicy plums, wild blueberries, and red currants, leading to suggestions of lilac, cardamom, fertile loam, and crushed rocks. The medium-bodied palate is elegant and fresh with wonderfully plush tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and fragrant.

Vivid plum colour, violet reflections, chewy tannins from the first moments. Loaded with cassis, blueberry and fresh fig fruits, laced through with rosemary, sage, dried herbs, edges of chamomile and fresh mushroom. Tight in its tannic structure, with smoked earth, cinammo, cardamom and lavender. Mathieu Bessonnet technical director, and the 47th vintage of owner Alfred Tesseron, 50% new oak, 35% amphora, 15% one year old barrels, 55 year average age of the vines. Harvest September 8 to 28, with clay used as sunscreen on the grapes to avoid sunburn, and a selection before harvest to drop any shrivelled berries.

Inside Bordeaux

Bright berry red in colour, nuanced blackberry and loganberry with bitter black chocolate notes from the first attack. Lovely precision, good level of spice, earthy, unfussy, rose stem and blackcurrant bud. This was the third vintage with mildew pessure, but the team are now experienced, and I can attest to seeing the vines during harvest and remarking on how healthy they looked, with no-till farming helping concentration. Plenty of tannins give structure and are shot through with sinew and juice, this is an impressive wine from technical director Mathieu Bessonet, with Pauillac typicity. Harvest 24 september until 12 October. 50% new oak, 35% amphora, 15% one year barrels, 15% press (aged in the amphora).

A classic 2017, more sculpted but less powerful than the 2014, 2015, 2016. This has elegance and finesse, needs time to be coaxed out of the glass to reveal a complex mix of blue and red fruits, and a lovely brush of Pauillac graphite, eucalyptus, black tea and pencil lead. Harvest September 18 to October 4. The frost of 2017 impacted Pontet Canet less than most places, only affecting the north-facing cooler parts of the vineyard.

Ruby red. Blueberries, cassis, lilac, blackberries and light leather. Fresh acidity. Complex and nuanced with cassis, crowberries, spice and minerals. Structured with polished tannins. Very long.

Hint av sursøte solbær, mørke sursøte kirsebær, jordlige sopp toner, veldig pene tobakk- preg, og noe grønne florale toner. 

Veldig pene og sødmefulle solbær toner, overraskende fruktig, pen konsentrasjon. Brede, samt noe utviklede tanniner, men fortsatt merkbare.

Medium garnet colored with a touch of brick, the 2013 Pontet-Canet offers up notes of stewed black tea, fried herbs, and tobacco leaf, leading to a core of dried cranberries and redcurrants with a touch of crushed rocks. The light to medium-bodied palate is firm and rugged with a very racy line, coming up minerally and chewy on the finish.

Rich tawny plum, full of warmth in colour. We asked for a 2nd bottle of this wine during the tasting, so I should warn you there might be variation, and it was not the most successful in the lineup. This was the year that they stopped having the wine entirely aged in barrel (a mix of new and one year old). Instead they brought in 100 amphoras for 35% of the production, 900l in size and made from the clay of Pontet Canet. It clearly makes a difference to the expression, and there is a beautifully nuanced, finessed feel to the raspberry, black cherry and cassis fruits, studded with saffron and sage and still gently held in place by Pauillac tannins. It makes for an interesting study in a vertical but this is not the vintage that I would most recommend to people trying to understand why Pontet Canet reaches the heights that it does. Harvest October 4 to 11.

A lighter-framed vintage than the 2010, and you see it even in the colour of the wine, that is still young but has a trace of rose-pink around the edging. Love the aromatics of smoke, chamomile, and fragrant violet. Touches of russet, autumn-tinged leaf alongside earthy red cherry and raspberry. This is a good choice for drinking now, but it will age because there are plenty of finely placed and integrated tannins. I gave this 95 points last time I tasted this in February 2021, and it is easily one of my favourite 2011s but there is austerity here. Harvest September 15 to 29, with a little more Merlot in the blend than is usual after a dry but not overly hot summer followed by a tricky harvest. 90% of the crop went into this wine, far higher than the first wine of many classifieds in the vintage.

Velvety tannins, intense with a black cherry and luscious creamy blackberry, fresh fig and raspberry fruits, with tobacco, liquorice, cedar, sandalwood, fennel. It's a wine to love, higher alcohol than usual in Pauillac which gives weight and texture through the mid palate, but the tannins are powerful enough to keep things confidently in check, and it is just starting to move into its drinking window. Harvest September 29 to October 17. First year of biodynamic certification.

Beautifully deep ruby colour, deliciously brambled fruits, cigar box, chocolate drops, mint leaf, confident and cradling tannins, this is a beautiful wine, easy and luxurious. The estate was in organic conversion at this point, not yet certified. Great quality. Jean-Michel Comme technical director.

Mørke jordbær, røde svale plommer. Veldig herbalsk, urtete, grønn paprika. Mye spice som kommer frem, tobakk, vått tre, og noe røyk. 

Smak av jordbær og røde plommer. Bra balanse og struktur. Brede og raffinerte tanniner. Pen finish.

Ruby red with a garnet rim. Leather, mature dark berries, spice, tobacco and licorice. Fresh acidity. Delicate and refined. Cherries, blueberries, leather and licorice. Balanced with polished tannins. Very long.

Blackberry, cedar, cigar box, black cherry, strawberry, meat, leather, smoke, vanilla, juniper, oak and forest floor.

Mye tettpakket mørk frukt i form av mørke plommer, bjørnebær og solbær. Videre preg av lær, treverk, sedertre og blyantkvess og noe grønne, tørkede urter i horisonten. God kompleksitet! Vinen har fremdeles en livlig friskhet, mye uanstrengt konsentrasjon i midtparti og en myndig men samtidig finkornet tanninstruktur. Er på en fin plass etter 30 år, men har nok ikke nådd toppen ennå. Dette er elegant, slankt og kulturelt med nydelige 12,5 % alkohol! Fabelaktig vin fra en adresse som bare leverer og leverer! 

Ruby red with a brick rim. Blackberries, leather, tobacco and figs. Fresh acidity. Clean, vibrant, delicate and playful. Dark berries, leather, light tar and minerals. Nice structure with integrated tannins. Long.

I just love the 1989 vintage in Bordeaux! Give them some time to breath and they deliver!

Har tålt 36 år godt, men fremstår noe slank. Trengte noen timer før den åpnet seg. Fortsatt mye frukt igjen. Bringebær, bjørnebær og noe skogsbæraktig, men det er i hovedsak rød frukt. Jord, fjøs, høstløv og sopp er det mye av. Bra syre.

Deep garnet-brick in color, the 1982 Pontet-Canet swans out with flamboyant notes of Indian spices, cigar box, and dried plums, leading to a fragrant core of fruit cake and rose bud tea. Light to medium-bodied, the palate has a lively line and a grainy texture supporting the delicate flavors, finishing long and minerally.
