The 2022 Boyd-Cantenac is medium to deep garnet-purple in color. It is a tad reduced and broody to start off, with rubber and charcoal notes giving way to a core of stewed plums and cassis, plus a waft of smoked meats. The medium-bodied palate has impressive freshness with soft, well-played tannins and lively fruit, finishing on an herbal note.

Cigar smoke, tobacco leaf, dark berry fruit, you can see the construction and the careful extraction, but the austerity is pretty high. Should soften further over ageing. 17ha, Lucien Guillemot. 40% new oak. Harvest 23 September to 10 October.

Inside Bordeaux

A blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 7% Petit Verdot, and 4% Cabernet Franc, the 2023 Boyd-Cantenac has a deep garnet-purple color. It is a little tarry and broody to start off, soon revealing scents of red and black plums, black raspberries, and sauteed herbs, plus touches of graphite and black pepper. The medium-bodied palate is a touch rugged and chewy, with savory flavors and an herbal finish.

Damson and smoked oak on the nose, sweet fruit on the opening beats and this is richer than many you will find in the appellation, with well-worked tannins. A gourmet feel, not quite masking the high acidities that appear on the finish, closing things down. But plenty of appeal, and estate signature. 70% new oak. 32hl/y yield. Harvest September 27 to October 12.

The 2020 Boyd-Cantenac has a deep garnet-purple color. It opens with broody, cedary scents before giving way to a core of cassis and juicy blackberries, with wafts of charcoal and wild sage. Medium-bodied, the palate is lively and taut with muscular fruit framed by fine-grained tannins, finishing long and refreshing.

Grilled cedar, clear smoked coffee bean and vanilla on the nose, blackberry and damson fruits underneath, but you have to work to get through to them. This has grip and structure also, and is an enjoyable wine.

The 2018 Boyd-Cantenac has a deep garnet purple color. The nose opens with scents of leather and Band-Aid, giving way to a core of baked plums, warm cassis, and grilled meats, with a touch of tar. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has chewy tannins and a lively backbone before going a little hollow and short of fruit. 

Deep ruby red, this has held the line over the past 17 years, still showcasing sweet charred oak on the nose and even a touch of reduction that needs time in the glass to clear. You feel the oak infuence, as is often the case with this wine, but it tastes younger than its years, and has full-fruited charm. Impressive, silky texture, plenty to enjoy here. Clearly shows that, although Boyd Cantenac doesn't always live up to its 3rd Growth billing, it really can deliver with the right vintage and some bottle ageing. Harvest September 26 to October 21.
