Squid ink, cassis, bilberry, roses, love the intensity and gorgeous salinity of this wine. Captures the sense of energy and florality in the best Cabernets of 2023, although retains the austerity that you expect from this site in its early years. First vintage in the new cellars, moving from 40 vats to 80 vats, with 30 microvinification vats. Harvest September 6 to October 5, 50% new oak for ageing, 44hl/h yields.

Inside Bordeaux

The 2023 Clos du Marquis is deep garnet-purple in color. It needs a little swirling to coax out classic notes of cassis, fresh plums, and cedar chest followed by hints of graphite and Provence herbs. The medium-bodied palate is energetic and refreshing, with grainy tannins to support and a lively finish. The blend is 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, and 9% Cabernet Franc. The alcohol is 13.5%.

Expert

Bright vivid plum character, sappy and juicy, the austerity is pretty high with cloves and smoky black tea, elderflower, cherry pit. Needs time in bottle to really open up, but this is good quality, and has plenty of St Julien character. 32hl/ha yield. 50% new oak, with some larger oak casks. 3.62 pH, 32 hl/ha. 7.6% press wine. Harvest 25 September to 10 October.

A blend of 45.5% Merlot, 44.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Cabernet Franc, the 2022 Clos du Marquis has a deep garnet-purple color. It charges out of the gate with notes of crème de cassis, plum preserves, and juicy blueberries, followed by wafts of dried roses, fertile loam, and unsmoked cigars. The medium-bodied palate has lovely freshness and fine-grained tannins framing the exuberant black fruits, finishing with a refreshing lift.

A blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, and 14% Cabernet Franc, the 2021 Clos du Marquis has a deep garnet-purple color. An evocative perfume spills out of the glass with scents of lavender oil, crushed blackcurrants, and black raspberries, leading to hints of crushed rocks and underbrush. The medium-bodied palate is taut with tight-knit black and red berry flavors, framed by firm, grainy tannins and bold freshness, finishing long and minerally. Nice!

Plommer, solbær, noe mineralske toner, med florale preg.

Mye av det samme på smak med veldig sødmefull frukt. Et spennende slott å følge fremover, skinner i denne årgangen.

An excellent vintage, love the black cherry and blackberry fruits that are held in by graphite and slate-smothered tannins. The texture overall is gorgeous, with a muscular tannic hold and a scraping salinity that gives a mouthwatering finish. Eucalyptus also rather than mint on the finish gives punch and spice. The terroir for Clos du Marquis is a little further back from the river than the main plots for Léoville Las Cases, and a little more susceptible to water stress, but this takes the heat of the vintage in its stride. 40hl/ha yield, 50% new oak.

Clos du Marquis 2018 has a deep garnet purple color. It rocks up with open-knit notes of blackcurrants, plums, and blueberries, plus suggestions of tree bark, pencil lead, and lavender. Medium to full-bodied, the palate offers a good core of pure black fruits and a firm, grainy texture, finishing long and refreshing.  

Duft av mørk sødmefull konsentrert frukt, type sorte solbær, bjørnebær på vei til å bli modne, sort te.

Smak av sorte bjørnebær, mørke tette solbær, og lakris. Tett og rustikk, samt dyp og konsentrert. 

Sappy red and black fruits, good grip through the palate, enjoyable, ready to drink, slim and savoury, with nutmeg and clove spices giving a kick on the finish, good stuff. Definitely one to drink now, no need to wait.

Amatør

The 2013 Clos du Marquis has a medium garnet color, with a touch of brick. It needs a little swirling to bring out scents of pencil shavings, dried cranberries, and raspberry leaves, followed by touches of bay leaves and tar. Medium-bodied, the palate is delicately styled with a lively backbone and soft, well-managed tannins supporting the fragile fruit, finishing on a minerally note.

Cedar and raspberry, this is an attractive Clos du Marquis that is in a sweet spot for drinking. Unfussy and earthy, a few hard tannins that catch on the finish, but plenty to recommend. An unusually high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon lends extra interest.

Fersk mørk frukt i form av bjørnebær og solbær. Sør pipetobakk, lær, mokkasjokolade, kamferkiste, høstløv og matjord. Veldig aromatisk og sjarmerende nese. I munnen er det en stor og veldig konsentrert vin som tøyles av en god friskhet. De sekundære og tertiære aromaene pirrer og gir vinen en tydelig og særegen karakter. Utgang med modne, pudrete tanniner og meget god lengde. På en veldig fin plass i livet selv om det ennå ikke er noe hastverk med å drikke opp! 

WSET 2

Kompleks og pen på duft med urter, kirsebær, røde plommer, modne jordbær. Munn tar litt tid, men åpner noe ala det samme. Fløyel, balansert, lang. En veldig fin opplevelse.
