Inside Bordeaux

The 2023 Leoville Barton is deep garnet-purple in color. It features fragrant scents of violets, fertile loam, and rose oil leading to a core of redcurrant jelly, cassis, and licorice with a touch of cardamom. The medium-bodied palate is tense and tightly wound at this youthful stage, like a taut spring ready to pop. Firm, fine-grained tannins and a racy backbone adeptly support the vibrant fruit, finishing long and perfumed. The blend is 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, and 3% Cabernet Franc, aged in barriques, 60% new.

Deep garnet-purple colored. After a little shaking, notes of fresh red cherries, mulberries, and stewed red plums hop from the glass, leading to hints of fallen leaves, graphite, and rose bud tea. Light-bodied, the palate is refreshing and pure, delivering soft, approachable tannins and bright red berry flavors, finishing on a perfumed floral note.

Expert

A blend of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Franc, the 2021 Leoville Barton was aged in 60% new oak. It has a deep garnet-purple color and it gently wafts from the glass with classic scents of cassis, blackberries, and kirsch, giving way to nuances of violets, crushed rocks, and powdered cinnamon. The medium-bodied palate delivers taut, muscular black fruit, with approachable, grainy tannins and a lively line, finishing long and minerally. Wonderfully classic!

Mørk, sødmefull frukt, solbær, bjørnebær, røde plommer, røde jordbær, mørke kirsebær, anis, integrert varm mineralitet og noe vanilje. 

Veldig gjenkjennelig Saint Julien på duft.

Røde og mørke jordbær og markjordbær på smak. En balanse og struktur som skriker Leoville Barton som spiller på en feminin struktur. Høy konsentrasjon med tette tanniner.

Elongated tannins, a slow build through the palate, showing the finessed side of Barton compared to the monumental 2016. Plenty of deep brambled cassis and blackberry fruits, a crunch of pomegranate, crayon and graphite, and a juicy finish that is standing of the edge of its drinking window, and will deliver for the next decade. Tasted separately to the rest of the horizontal. 60% new oak.

Dyp, mørk rubinrød. Intens duft av mørke bær, eik - eller kanskje mer sedertre - og krydder. Fyldig og intens med flott lite snerp. Lang og kompleks. Bunnsolid Bordeaux som med fordel kan lagres en god stund til. 

WSET 2

Even on the nose you feel that there is depth and interest here, plenty of character at the 10 year point, and even a whisper of appellation signature. This is classic, old school, balanced St Julien, juicy and enjoyable, and one to recommend. Expect cassis and bilberry fruits, autumnal hedgerow, a crackle of campfire, even an edge of crayon. Good. Harvest October 2 and 15, cropped at 35hl/ha.

Classic and restrained style, good weight and elegant fruit, a bit backward with present tannin, high acidity and long finish, potent but needing time.

Sommelier

Lukt av tette, blå bær av solbær, blåbær og bjørnebær. Det er også furutrær, lakris, mocca, blyantspiss og vanilje. 

Smaken er konsentrert med flere lag. Fine jordlige og litt spicy toner. Den er leskende og fortsatt på et ungt stadiet. Noe grønne og litt bitre toner, men ellers balansert og en veldig solid vin. Ettersmaken sitter lenge. 

Mørk, sødmefull frukt, sandig, dyp, lagdelt, bjørnebær, sursøte, sorte kirsebær.

Smak av mørke bjørnebær, sorte kirsebær, flotte sorte kirsebær. Myk, feminin og lekker. Kompakt og veldig konsentrert.

Medium rød, lett brunet kant til klar kant. Mørk bær, bourboun vanilje, toastafat, lærtoner, litt mineralsk. Medium syre, fin crisp frukt som balanserer godt med syren. Litt tørrende tanniner som sitter lenge mens frukten svinner bort. Utgangen er lang og fat preget med litt bær. 

A challenging vintage that overperformed at Langoa, this is delicate but powerful with still dark fruits. Silky tannins with balance and finesse. As it opens, there are waves of chocolate shavings, savoury cassis, rose petal, hints of black truffle, sliding into tertiary flavours but in a sweet spot right now. That same unfussy drinkability that you find in the 1994, a wine to share, offering so much pleasure. 50% new oak for ageing, Michel Raoul technical director, Eric Boissenot consultant.

Mørk rød, ingen bruning men litt lys. Fin rødbærsfrukt, lær,  fine tobakkstoner, litt tre og lær, IFA,  super delikat nese, litt underskog. Medium syre, god balanse mot frukten, fin konsentrasjon med en litt strukturert og tørrende tanniner som overvinnes fint av frukten. Utgangen, er litt varmkrydret og sitter lenge. Super deilig vin, 

The 2005 Leoville Barton is deep brick-colored.  It needs a fair bit of shaking to wake up notes of blackberry preserves, crème de cassis, mince pie, and kirsch, giving way to a perfume of candied violets and wood smoke, plus a hint of cardamom. The light to medium-bodied palate is laden with black and red berry layers, supported by firm, ripe, grainy tannins and seamless acidity, finishing with epic length and depth. Gorgeous!

Dyp rød med brunlig kant. Solbærfest, lær, sigar. Balansert med modne tanniner. Synes denne drikker meget pent nå men sikkert masse å gå i mange år framover.

More proof that if you want a great 2003 right now, you should head to St Julien or Pauillac, where the exoticism of the vintage is held in check by savoury Cabernet notes and plenty of tannic grip. You'll find traces of black truffle, charcoal and crème de cassis exuberance, along with soft blackberry and damson fruits, incense, liqourice root and plenty of cigar box smoky notes. Hard to resist, in its drinking window but no rush to drink. In the Barton family since 1826. 70% new oak.

Medium rød, mørk kjerne. Solbær, mørke bær, lær, svake stallaromaer, kjeller, super klassisk nese. Medium syre, fin frukt, balansen er nydelig litt på den syrlige siden, med en fin konsentrasjon. Tanninene river og sliter i munnen, uten at det blir for mye, glir ut en i en lang pepret og syrlig ettersmak.

Mørk rød, blank kant. Mørke bær, fat toner av vaniljestang,  eik, noe preg av gammalt skap eller gammel bok som gir seg litt med tiden. Medium syre, fin frukt som balanserer litt på den syrlige siden. Tanninene gir litt motstand, tørrende, glir over i litt grønt. Sitter litt kort. Etter å ha latt denne stå litt blir den litt mere balanse



Dyp rød, lett brunet. Mørke bær, chilifrukt, lavendel, metallisk, stall, knust stein, lær og trevirke. Medium syre, litt varm frukt gir en ok balanse, tanninen er godt begynnende integrerte men med en svak tørring, litt kort avslutning som domineres av en pepret syre. 

Murstein og transparent på farge med lys kant. 
Endel finkornet bunnfall. 
Lite frukt på duft, men lær, kjeller og fat. På smak derimot er den overraskende fruktig og jucy. Medium kropp, flott syre og virkelig lang ettersmak. 
Fin å drikke nå. 

Certified Sommelier

The 1996 Leoville Barton is deep brick-colored. It gallops out of the glass with powerful, classic scents of blackberry preserves, dried mulberries, and tobacco leaf, with hints of cedar chest and crushed rocks, plus a waft of wild sage. The light-bodied palate has a sturdy backbone of chewy tannins and a lively line to frame the impactful, mature, Cabernet flavors, finishing long and lifted.

Fortsatt tighte tanniner, frukten begynner å bli uber sex. Kan ligge lett i 5-7 år til.

Undergrowth, leather, raspberry and sweet cherry fruits, alongside cloves, ash, campfire smoke. Fades a little on the finish but this is juicy and extremely moreish, could be polished off in half an hour with a good friend. This was the time in St Julien where owner Michel Delon was starting to do some green harvesting over at Las Cases, but Léoville Barton kept things traditional - reducing crops through pruning at the beginning of the season not through dropping fruit later on. Not a vintage that gets much love, but this is great for drinking now. Will not stay at this sweet spot for too long, so I suggest making the most of it. Michel Raoul technical director.

The 1993 Leoville Barton has a medium to deep brick color. It offers up notes of wild fungi, dried figs, and dusty soil, with hints of truffles, tapenade, and rusty nails, plus a waft of old Chesterfield. The light-bodied palate delivers a surprising amount of red berry flavors, with minerally undertones and racy acidity, finishing long and earthy.


Medium rød, mørk kjerne, lett brunet kant. Mørke bær, nydelig fat preg avrundet lær, søtlig pipetobakk, blyantkvess, nyansert og delikat. Medium syre, nydelig mørk frukt med innslag av granateple og rips, perfekt balanse gir en nydelig munnfølelse fortsatt litt fin struktur i tanninene. Søt syrlig utgang som sitter 1min+ med en fint snev av søtlig preg

Litt mørkere i fargen enn 85, men samme brune kant. Tight frukt på nesen, mineralsk, knust stein, litt mose og et snev av en Valhrona Manjari med sitt rødfrukts preg. Medium+ syre, frukten er forholdsvis svak og lite tilstede, etter det lille av frukt framstår den veldig hul i midtpartiet før rustikke tanniner tar over tørrer ut munnhulen. Syrlig utgang og litt ubalansert i munnen. 

Tydelig kjerne i glasset, med dyp royal-rød farge. Nese av modne moreller, solbær og varm rød frukt. Et bittelite hint av eik, blyantspiss, hint av pepper.
Medium-pluss fylde, god syre med et bitt av tanniner fortsatt, veldig behagelig til ytrefilet. Lang hale som gir et fyldig preg, digg!

The 1972 Leoville Barton has a pale brick color. Notions of dried Provence herbs, dried lavender, and mint tea waft from the glass, over a core of dried cherries, tobacco leaf, leather, and dusty soil. The light-bodied palate is refreshing and delicate, with powdery tannins and a savory finish.
