The Guinedeau family are killing it with the whites in their range, despite being fara better known for their reds - for me a true sign that the people behind them are wine lovers, who like drinking them, and are excited about the possibilities. This is far simpler than the Champs Libres, but that doesn't make it any less dynamic, just less structured. Expect here fresh citrus, touch of lime peel, salted cracker, and a juicy finish, once again more about texture than fruit.

Inside Bordeaux

A blend of 80% Sauvignon and 20% Semillon, the 2023 white Grand Village springs with spritely notes of lime leaves, fresh lemons, and yuzu, plus suggestions of white pepper and chalk dust. The medium-bodied palate is vibrant with great tension, finishing long and zesty.

Sails out of the glass with vibrant notes of freshly squeezed lemons, grapefruit juice, and lime blossoms, followed by hints of white pepper and chalk dust. The light to medium-bodied palate is super-intense with vibrant citrus layers and amazing tension, finishing long and zesty.

Citrus, pink grapefruit, white pear, grippy tannins, with the cooling blast that I found in the red version of the Grand Village estate. Salted cracker and iodine notes on the finish, make this a particularly juicy and refreshing white in this hot vintage. Half Sauvignon Blanc massal selection from Sancerre planted in 2010, and half from Bordeaux clones, fermented and aged on the lees in Burgundian barrels, now back in stainless steel tank to be bottled early July 2023. 1.5ha and small yields following tiny berry size, so this will not be easy to get hold of.

A blend of 73% Sauvignon Blanc and 27% Semillon, the 2021 white Grand Village pops from the glass with notes of fresh grapefruit, green apples, and lime blossoms, plus hints of coriander seed, paraffin wax, and white pepper. The light to medium-bodied palate is filled with citrusy flavor, with a crisp backbone and a long chalky finish.

A blend of 85% Sauvignon Blanc and 15% Semillon, the 2020 Grand Village Blanc springs from the glass with vivacious notes of lemon curd, lime blossoms, and fresh grapefruit, followed by hints of struck flint and dill seed. The medium-bodied palate shimmers with energy and amazing tension, finishing with persistent chalky and zesty layers.

White pear, citrus, sage, with a gunsmoke and pepper twist on the finish. Fermentation in barrel, then 20% new oak. Around half of the planted Sauvignon Blanc is from Sancerre genetics, and it has a clarity of expression that is a rare in Bordeaux white. From the same family as Château Lafleur in Pomerol.

Stone fruits, tense and nervy edges, with a saline lick through the finish, somehow seems to come from a fresher vintage than 2018. I could easily have put the big sibling Les Champs Libre in this spot, as it is one of my favourite dry whites from Bordeaux, but it is worth checking out the less expensive Grand Village. The same family attention to detail (as you would expect from the Guinaudeau family of Château Lafleur), and pretty much the perfect moment to drink. From vines on clay-limestone soils just to the northwest of Fronsac, grown at the home of Jacques and Sylvie Guinaudeau, with a significant part of the Sauvignon Blanc vines coming from Sancerre-sourced, massal-selected plants. 20% new oak.

Spennende greier på nese. Åpner lett reduktivt med pikepromp samt duften av en gammel oljete kjeledress i en smøregrav. Langt bak noe fruktighet av melon og grapefrukt, samt hint av honning og hvite blomster. Noe krevende og utenfor boksen på nese. I munnen finner vinen denne gode harmonien mellom Sauvignon Blanc og Semillon som gode hvite Bordeaux-er mestrer så godt. God konsentrasjon, OK lengde. Kanskje litt i særeste laget, men en spennende matvin.
