Dark brooding fruits, this is intense and concentrated, ripe flavours with an exotic edge, cassis, roasted plum, damson and star fruit with a curl of woodsmoke and tobacco leaf, set against fresher edges of blueberry and iris. This is serious, structured, with everything turned up pretty high, giving the imprint of the vintage in its black pepper, rosemary, turmeric, mandarin peel and clove. 3.79ph, harvest September 7 right through to October 5. Blend done by December, yield 23hl/h. Ageing sees the first year in barrel, then second year in larger sized oak casks to minimise oak impact, something that will be particularly important in a year with these unusually high alcohols.

Inside Bordeaux

Composed of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, and 4% Petit Verdot, the 2022 Palmer is deep garnet-purple in color. It needs a lot of shaking and swirling to lure out a soft-spoken perfume of roses, lavender, star anise, and cloves, leading to a profound core of Morello cherries, fresh, juicy blackberries, and blackcurrant cordial. The full-bodied palate is stacked with layer upon layer of black, blue, and red fruits, supported by a skyscraper structure of very firm, very ripe, grainy tannins and superb tension, finishing with epic length and depth. This is a monumental achievement. pH 3.79.

Medium intensity, inky colour and some delicious sappy fruits. Stretched out, sinewy, lean muscles, charcoal, slate, peony, gunsmoke, hugely engaging texture with salinity, and a mouthwatering finish. Easy to recommend, love it. Harvest 25 September to 10 October, 3.7ph, first year ageing in barrels, second in larger oak casks.

Definisjon på Margaux sødme. Sorte, konsentrerte, bjørnebær, jordbær og skogsbær. Veldig skogsbær fremtredende. Havre delen som kom opp i Alter Ego følger her også.

Smak av sorte, konsentrerte bjørnebær, blåbær og veldig skogsbær, samt havre. En utrolig balanse i vinen, hvor konsentrasjonen strekker seg fint gjennom strukturen i vinen. Silky tanniner. Noe alk.

Expert

The 2021 Palmer is deep purple-black in color. Notes of Morello cherries, fresh blackberries, and boysenberries pop from the glass, followed by suggestions of cinnamon stick, Sichuan pepper, aniseed, and crushed rocks, with a hint of roses. The light to medium-bodied palate has a racy backbone and rounded tannins framing the exuberant black fruits, finishing with a burst of energy.

The wine already appears very open and complete, ripe and unctuous fruit with sweet plum, cassis some herbaceous sage and mint with tobacco notes, oak feels very well integrated and the palate has an impressive polish and definition, rounded and supple, almost a Burgundian texture, yet remaining distinctly Margaux with great complexity and very long persistency.

En nese preget av mørk sødmefull frukt, hvor mørke bjørnebær og solbær er veldig fremtredende. Mørk og hvit sjokolade, eukalyptus, vanilje og trekrydder. Godt integrert sekundæraromaer. 

En smak av solmodne bjørnebær, solbær, vanilje, og lakris. God syre, med en heavy konsentrasjon. Tanninene er utrolig godt integrert, hvorav strukturen i vinen i sin helhet er spot on. Lang lengde.

Pen integrert margaux sødme, sødmefulle plommer, integrerte bjørnebær, hint av tobakk, hvit pepper og anis. 

Smak av bjørnebær, plommer, anis. Strukturerte, tette og konsentrerte tanniner. Ligge lenge. 

Peony and rosebud aromatics on the nose, welcoming even although the austerity is clear right now. Needs another few years to soften, as has far more density than many 2017s, along with clarity of expression, sculpted blueberry and cassis fruits. Resonates through the finish and as it opens you see the smoked cedar edges and sweet liquorice root. Harvest September 20 to 29, 60% new oak.

Just hover your nose over the glass to get excited about this wine. Inky purple in colour, cigar box, tobacco bud, pencil lead, tight cassis and bilberry fruit. Where the 2015 is generous, the 2016 is tighter, less expressive at the five year mark, but with layers and potential to fire up an entire room. Has the structure and the chiselled fruit that signposts great Bordeaux in an exceptional vintage, with the nuanced whisper of violet and peony that takes you to the Margaux appellation. Powerful and muscular, still austere but the morieish juice on the finish tells you how much this has to give over the next few decades. Harvest October 3 to 18. Gets better every time you go back to it. 60% new oak.

Deep ruby in colour, so much texture to this wine you really can sink into it. A fist of blueberry, raspberry and cassis fruit, with juice running right through. A sense of energy and irresistable momentum that pushes forward just as the liquorice, slate and pummice stone minerality work to pull you back in. Hard to resist, this is just a wonderfully impressive vintage, dense and structured tannins with gunsmoke, grilled cedar and a smile on the finish. Harvest September 22 to October 7. At this point the estate was fully in conversion, working 100% organically and biodynamically. 60% new oak.

Deep garnet-brick in color, the 2014 Palmer features evocative scents of stewed plums, blackberry preserves, and garrigue with hints of leather, Indian spices, and underbrush. The medium to full-bodied palate is chock full of black fruit preserves and exotic spice notes framed by plush tannins, finishing long and opulent.

The 2013 Palmer has a medium garnet color, with a touch of brick. It features slightly tired notions of raisin cake, sweaty leather, and rusty nails, over a waft of fallen leaves and dried herbs. The medium-bodied palate is coated with spicy dried berries and herbal sparks, framed by firm, chewy tannins and finishing on a peppery note.

The annual release of 10 year old Château Palmer, and this time it's an often-underrated but delicious vintage that sits in the shadow of the most prestigious years of the last decade. Proof of how slowly this wine ages, it is packed with blueberry and cassis fruits, a shot of mint leaf, mandarin peel, sage and dark chocolate, with shoulders and a serious architecture, bigger than you might expect for a vintage with such an easy-drinking, gourmet reputation. I last tasted this vintage around eight months ago and it has opened up further since then, often the case as wines shift around the decade mark, and this is an upscore. A moment when Palmer was fully committing to farming biodynamically, doubling its coverage to almost 15 hectares, and had just unveiled a new cellar. Harvest October 1 to 15, Sabrina Pernet technical director, Thomas Duroux director. 68% new oak. No rush to drink, and has many decades ahead, but you can begin thinking about it.

Amatør

Inky purple in colour. This begs to be taken slowly, as even visually you can see that the texture is rich and velvety and will benefit from a few more years softening in bottle. Dark chocolate and orange zest on the nose, this performs the levitating trick of heading upwards through your palate with mouthwatering acidities while pulling you downwards towards the tannins that are underpinning the whole experience. In between the two you find cassis, bilberry, raspberry and strawberry puree, just a whole array of pure, chiselled but juicy fruits.This is living up to promise, but needs more time, still a trace of austerity on the finish right now, even though the complexity and the layers are hard to resist. Sculpted, intense and concentrated. Harvest September 22 to October 20 - a full leisurely month, mirrored by the unhurried pace that this takes through your palate. 60% new oak.

Soy, liqourice, tar, white pepper and baked earth, this remains young and taut, with a punch of cassis, bilberry and fleshy black damson fruits. You reach out and touch the tannins, they are so velvety and rippled. Not as effortlessly balanced as the 2005, this has more of an exuberant character, with chocolate and turmeric spice rippling through the fruits, and a mouthwatering crushed mint leaf finish. You can approach this now with a good few hours in a carafe, but it will improve further with another few years in bottle. Harvest September 23 to October 14, 60% new oak. One hectare of the vineyard was tested in biodynamic farming in this vintage.

Young and dense in its fruit character, with black cherry and bilberry fruits, baked earth, black truffles and saffron spice. The tannins are velvety and muscular, the finish spicy and long, and this remains a concentrated wine with plenty of life ahead of it. A late ripening year, where Autumn really saved what had been a pretty difficult August and early September. Harvest October 1 to 17, 60% new oak.

White pepper, raspberry leaf, dancing minerality, fine-boned tannins, rosebud and peony aromatics. As is often the case with the 2007 vintage, the less dense fruit means that a smokey, grilled character is emphasised, which makes this an extremely appealing wine that is ready to drink now, and will give a ton of enjoyment over the next few years, but is less for the long term than many of the vintages in this vertical. Harvest September 20 to October 2, 60% new oak.

Less exuberant in its aromatics than the 2005, a touch of crème de cassis on the first nose, slightly chalky tannins but as it opens in the glass you dive through to the rich blackberry and cassis fruits. This is a satisfyingly balanced and classically Left Bank Palmer - concentrated, savoury fruits, touches of cedar and mint leaf on the finish, grilled liqourice, nuanced and finessed. Harvest September 19 to October 2, 60% new oak.

Enticing ruby red body, with aromatics that show a touch of orange zest and turmeric spice. The fruit is creamy, intense, a brilliant Palmer that has finesse and balance but a serious kick. Black pepper, cinammon, raspberry, bilberry fruits, smoked earth and campfire on the finish, so juicy, totally salivating with a slate-textured close of play. Delicious, and a great sign that the 2005 vintage is starting to swing open. Harvest September 22 to October 7, 60% new oak. A long dry summer, with 57% less rainfall than usual, although temperatures never climbed as high as in 2003. Impossible to stop smiling after this.

A more classic year than the 2003 or 2005 on either side, really showing beautifully right now, still young but full of promise, tension and juice. This is an extremely elegant, balanced Palmer, with dark berry fruits, cassis and blackberry, touch of campfire smoke, salinity and plenty of juice running through the muscular tannins. Plays with you on the finish, stretching out its flavours, salivating, totally gorgeous, suprisingly so for a vintage that can get overlooked. One that you could happily open now, or hold for another decade or more. Harvest September 27 to October 12, 60% new oak. Thomas Duroux's first vintage as director.

Intense spice, majoring on smoked earth, pink pepper and black truffle notes, the fruit is softened, heading towards raspberry puree, crème de mure and fig. Plenty of freshness, with orange peel and graphite adding structure and texture. Soft rose petal colour around the edges shows the evolution overall, but there is still so much pleasure to be had here, and at least another decade of drinking. One of those vintages when you can really see the benefit that Bordeaux gets from being able to blend - far less Merlot was used in this wine than usual, because of the unusually high levels of ripeness and sugar that was found in the grape after the long hot summer (with temperatures reguarly breaking 40C during June, July and August). Harvest September 8 to 20, 60% new oak.

Plenty of upfront raspberry and blackberry fruits, not as elegant as the 2001 but with structure and concentration. Touches of white pepper spice, along with gunsmoke and cigar box as it opens, this is enjoyable and has a skip of acidity that keeps your mouth watering and keeps momentum drawing you forward through the palate. Harvest September 26 to October 7, 60% new oak. Palmer avoided some of the heavier rains that affected much of Bordeaux during harvest (just 5mm on this spot in the biggest storm of September 20), and was seen as one of the wines of the vintage. Impressive, and surprising.

Nose a little more subdued than the 2000, but this has the truffle, rosebud and woodsmoke combination of a Palmer that is at a perfect moment to share. Loganberry, raspberry, tobacco leaf, peony, mint leaf, the tannins are finessed and finely spun, tracing the outline of the fruit but not constricting it in any way. Waves of aromatics through the palate keep you hooked, this is nuanced, elegant, moreish, with so much Margaux appellation charater, and a juicy finish. Harvest September 29 to October 11. 60% new oak.

Usedvanlig ren og presis nese, lag på lag med klassisk aroma av «Bordeaux», cedertre, eukalyptus, tobakk, solbær, plommer, flott munnfølelse, vinen er sømløs, fra A til Å er smakskurven perfekt, fyldig anslag, strukturert, fantastisk dyp fruktkjerne, men med et «burgundersk» og luftig preg, modne behagelige tanniner, en strålende vin som drikker nydelig nå og sikkert i 15 år til.

The color is dense, but the nose is light, porous and medium fruity with blackcurrants. There are also red roses, cedar and minerals. It is complex and appealing. The palate is medium-bodied, velvety, medium-fruity and acidic in a fine balance. The tannins are fine-grained and fully integrated. The finish is long and acidic. It’s lovely to drink now, but can be aged for many more years, but I don’t think it will get any better than it is now.

Denne fikk dessverre litt for kort tid i karaffelen. Tror den burde ha minst 3 timer. Lukket, men fortsatt en god vin.

Medium brick in color, the 1961 Château Palmer opens a little broody with notes of sweaty leather and iodine, soon giving way to an alluring core of fruit cake, dried blueberries, cigar box, and iron ore, plus touches of dried herbs and black truffles. The light to medium-bodied palate has a satiny texture and lively acidity framing the mature, delicate dried berry flavors, finishing on a peppery note.
