Tons of energy, stone fruits, cherry pits, damson, a lovely feeling of fruit that has plenty of life ahead it, fresh and juicy with sapidity. not trying too hard just full of pleasure. Edge of grilled campfire, graphite, generosity, easily one of the wines of the vintage. 11.3% press wine, 3.53pH, 46.6hl/ha yield. Harvest 17 September to 8 October, 80% new oak for ageing.

Inside Bordeaux

Deep garnet-purple colored. Slowly unfurls in the glass to reveal fragrant notes of warm red plums, kirsch, and strawberry pie, plus hints of mossy tree bark and black olives. The light to medium-bodied palate is plush and refreshing with impressive intensity and a perfumed finish. Pretty!

A great aromatic hit on the opening beats, giving way to silky tannins, spiced plum, rhubarb and slate, cassis and bilberry fruit, all showing depth and intensity. Such an accomplished wine, once again showing how it's done. 100% new oak for malolactic and ageing, 8 coopers, 28 different toasts. 45.7hl/h yields, which is generous for this vintage in the Margaux appellation. Harvest September 14 to October 2. 3.59ph.

Easily one of the best wines of the appellation. Red rose petal fragrance, damp earth, rosemary, baking spice, sandalwood, incense, graphite and slate. Exceptional balance, deep chocolate and mint character, with lush damson and cassis fruits. Crushed violet flowers and salted cracker salinity, extremely impressive. Owner Henri Lurton has experience of making wine overseas, in Baja California, which may have given insights into viticultural techniques n the heat, but the real key here is the old vine Cabernet Sauvignon planted in the 1950s and 1960s by his late father Lucien Lurton. 100% new oak, from 8 coopers, and the meticulous approach to oak ageing care of technical director Christophe Capdeville is also important. 42% of production in the 1st wine. All the young vines, even when co-planted in the same rows were picked separately also this year.

The 2021 Brane-Cantenac is deep garnet-purple in color. After a swirl or two, notes of black raspberries, juicy blackberries, and cassis come barreling out of the glass, plus nuances of dried herbs and graphite. The light to medium-bodied palate offers great tension and intensity, with fine-grained tannins and a long, savory finish.

There is an exuberance to the 2020 vintage at Brane Cantenac, with rippling depths to the damson fruit, along with liqourice, graphite, cocoa bean, fine tannins, white pepper, sage. Feels fully ripe but well restrained, very Margaux. 100% new oak with 28 different parameters, including forest origin, level of toasting, width of the grain and time of seasoning the oak staves before barrel construction. Just such a meticulous approach, and no doubt helps deepen the complexity in the final glass, as do choices such as the touch of Carmanère in the blend (and the increase in Cabernet Sauvignon over recent years). Well handled and well placed fruits, this remains a little restrained now, but on opening up you get crushed stone and black pepper spice that adds a gourmet edge to the just-smoked oak. Extremely high quality, delivering on its En Primeur promise. 100% new oak.

Expert

Medium to deep garnet-brick in color, the 2014 Brane-Cantenac leaps with vivacious notes of kirsch and redcurrant jelly followed by hints of dried mint, forest floor, and black pepper. The medium-bodied palate is vibrant and refreshing, with fine-grained tannins and a perfumed finish.

The 2013 Brane-Cantenac is medium garnet in color, with a touch of brick. It sings of dried roses and cherries, giving way to wafts of aniseed, tree bark, fallen leaves, and wild sage. The light to medium-bodied palate delivers a racy backbone and herb-laced red berries, with a chewy yet approachable texture and a lively finish.

The 2012 Brane-Cantenac is medium to deep garnet colored. It opens with tobacco leaf, leather, and tilled earth scents over a core of prunes and mince pies, plus a suggestion of dried sage. The medium-bodied palate is a little thin yet has nice freshness, offering chewy tannins and a savory finish.

Bjørnebær, solbær, sedertre, lær og en meget kledelig floralitet på nese. Innbydende og sensuell. Årgangen fikk innledningsvis mye pepper for å være en dårlig årgang, men jeg angrer som en hund på at jeg ikke har kjøpt mer, for årgangen viser seg som en mellomårgang++ i hele Médoc. Vinen har tilstrekkelig friskhet, god vekt og fylde i midtparti som wrappes inn i denne Margaux-fløyelen vi alle er så glad i. Balanserte og modne tanniner som kjæler med kjakene. Flott vin og et av mange gode kjøp på Hamar.

WSET 2

Delicious, although the 2009 is definitely the one to go for at any time over the next decade. In contrast, the 2010 still feels pretty closed, not yet fully expanding through the mid palate. Graphite, pencil lead, crayon, cassis, brambled hedgerow fruit, very Left Bank. 70% new oak. Harvest 27 September to 14 October.

Ruby red, this remains closed on the nose, and the tannic structure is still tight at 17 years old, proof that 2005 retains its ability to frustrate, but the hints of mature notes are finally becoming clear. So much potential and subdued power, linear, focused, great clarity of cassis and bilberry fruit, with 2005 energy showing a core of ripe fruit, tobacco and truffle. Excellent tension and balance, a tightrope walk through the palate here, edges of mandarin peel, raspberry leaf and eucalyptus showing that it wasn't a vintage that delivered overripe fruit, but balance and focus. It needs a little longer to fully express its potential.

Shared during the Mentor Week at the château, and it just blew everyone away around the table. These are always special moments (as with the Kirwan 1982 during the 2023 Mentor Week) when the magic of mature Bordeaux becomes clear. This is full of melted tannins, very much in its drinking window, with a slide towards tertiary smoked earth and campfire notes, still with softened raspberry puree fruits. Delicate, fragrant, one to savour, and consider drinking within the next decade.
