Inside Bordeaux

First year in the new 100% gravity-fed cellar for this superb estate that is increasingly making its presence felt - helped not just by the new eco-concious winery but by the extra 10ha of excellent Margaux terroir, complete with old vine Cabernet Sauvignon on fine gravel, bought in 2020. It's a clear success in 2023, and you'll find plenty of vibrant fruit, majoring on spiced plum and cassis, sinewy tannins, liqourice bud, tobacco, mint and campfire smoke. Conveys coiled energy and will age well. An excellent example of a 94 point 'buy' signal. José Sanfins director.

A real golden patch for the Cantenac Brown team, with ever increasing confidence in extraction and expression, plenty of floral edges with inky plum and a vibrant violet rim. Things are pretty intense, with aromatics that are highly charged, with fresh acidities, intense violet and plum, good quality, rich and ripped texture. This is a good quality wine with heavy tannin imprint on the finish, and decades ahead of it. Fingerprints of the vintage, delivered with deft precision. 60% new oak barrels, 40% one vintage barrels for ageing.

Smak av mørke og røde bær. Tette konsentrerte tanniner. En veldig kompleks vin. Lagdelt og presis. Dette med alder blir latterlig.

Plenty to grip on to with here, with textured damson and black cherry fruit. Feels deft and well-worked, with a confident tannic frame and enticing layers of espresso and black chocolate. Tristan le Lous is the new owner at this property as of this vintage, with José Sanfins remaining as CEO and Technical Director. 60% new oak, with 51% of overall production in this wine. This is a powerful wine, but delivers a lilting elegance and freshness that runs through the ripples of blackberry and damson fruit. A flash of heat provides an echo of the heat of the summer, but this is a confident wine from an estate that is increasingly impressive. New owner Tristan le Lous arrived in late 2019, so for the final ageing and bottling of this vintage, working with long-time director José Sanfins. 60% new oak barrels.

It contains 67% Cabernet Sauvignon and 33% Merlot. The nose is fruity with blackcurrants and blackberries. There is also forest floor, some graphite, and some licorice. It is clean and appealing. The palate is slim, intensely fruity, medium acidic and with noticeable but fine-grained tannins. The finish is long and complex. 

It’s surprisingly available now, and is lovely to drink, but it can easily age for 10+ years. TW92-93

Amateur

The 2014 Cantenac Brown is medium to deep garnet in color. Scents of dusty soil, tobacco, and tree bark give way to touches of dried figs and fruitcake on the nose. The medium-bodied palate is soft and lively, with just enough mature fruit flavors and a peppery lift on the finish.

The 2013 Cantenac Brown has a medium garnet color, with a touch of brick. It skips out with ready-to-go notes of kirsch, dried redcurrants, and sauteed herbs, with hints of pencil lead, tapenade, and charcoal in the background. The light to medium-bodied palate is refreshing and pure with well-sustained red berry ad savory flavors and a pleasantly chewy finish.

En fremtredende sødmefull duft av sorte jordbær, mørke solbær, samt noe rustikke toner. Hvit sjokolade, kakaopulver, lakris, blyantspiss og våt jord. Veldig stilriktig på duft.

Smak av bjørnebær, røde skogsbær, mørke jordbær, lakris og hvit sjokolade. En ung vin fortsatt, men drikker pent selvom. Strukturen er fin. Noe kort.

Slankere enn 2005 - mangler litt frukt i midtpartiet men fortsatt en deilig vin med herlig tertiær preg og fin balanse. Beste 2020-26 tenker jeg

Orange with a brown rim. Figs, dates, tobacco and truffles. Fresh acidity. Delicate with figs, some dried berries, leather, cedar wood and minerals. Integrated supple tannins. Long.

It does not get any better. Drink up!

Sometimes you open a bottle and just do not know what to expect. The 71-vintage was a good vintage in Bordeaux, but it should be way past it's prime now. Therefore, I really did not know how this bottle would turn out. Fortunately it was still good! Just love ut when 50+ year old juice still is alive!
