Deep garnet-purple colored. Notes of juicy raspberries and mulberries leap from the glass, leading to hints of forest floor and pencil shavings with a hint of dusty soil. The light to medium-bodied palate is silky and fragrant with great energy and freshness, finishing on a whispery red berry note.

The 2022 La Chapelle de la Mission Haut-Brion is composed of 55.9% Merlot, 35.4% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 8.7% Cabernet Franc aging in 19.8% new oak. Deep garnet-purple in color, it comes barreling out of the glass with bold notions of baked black plums, chocolate-covered cherries, and boysenberries, leading to wafts of menthol, Indian spices, and fragrant soil. The medium to full-bodied palate is packed with expressive black and blue fruits, supported by plush tannins and just enough freshness, finishing with a spicy lift.

The best estates have really worked the aromatics during ageing, recognising that the 2021s are less concentrated at their heart than many recent vintages. This is a great example, expressive and enticing, with spiced cloves and white pepper, campfire and crushed rocks, with plenty of raspberry and loganberry fruit that have a sense of springing back after the first sip. 48hl/h yields after no frost and very little mildew. 27% new oak.

Elegant dark berry notes, fine oak, tobacco and a herbal spiciness. Medium weight but still good density of fruit and a refreshing tannic backbone, well integrated oak at this stage and a fine length.

Intense cedar, cumin, smoked caramel and grilled raspberry on the opening, white pepper, tea and sage adding further nuance as it opens. Opulent but with fresh lift on the finish, this is ready to drink now, maintains the excellence of La Chapelle.

The 2014 La Chapelle de la Mission Haut-Brion is medium to deep garnet-brick in color. Notes of dried sage and redcurrant jelly jump from the glass, leading to underlying scents of leather, underbrush, and menthol. The medium-bodied palate has a lively backbone and chewy tannins supporting the red berry and savory layers, finishing on a lingering herbal note.

La Chapelle de la Mission Haut-Brion 2013 has a medium garnet color, with a touch of brick. Notions of cherry cough syrup and raspberry leaves waft from the nose, with touches of unsmoked cigars, bay leaves, and damp soil. The medium-bodied palate maintains a lively bit of fruit, with a chewy texture and an herbal lift on the finish.

The 2012 La Chapelle de la Mission Haut-Brion is medium to deep garnet colored. It offers up pronounced eucalyptus, cassis, and dark chocolate scents with cigar box and underbrush in the background. Medium to full-bodied and packed with juicy black fruits, it has a soft texture and just enough freshness, finishing long and minty.

Tasted in London at a supper with friends back in the early part of the year, and it has remained in my memory ever since. One of the most consistently brilliant 2nd wines of Bordeaux, although made in tiny quantities so one of the few bottles that it truly pays to buy En Primeur. Still inky in colour at 15 years old, touches of undergrowth, sandalwood and turmeric spice, ripe tannins and velvety blackberry fruits, with the shot of peony and lilac flower that makes La Chapelle such a standout wine. 31% new oak. Harvest September 2 to 29.
