Clearer levels of intensity and concentration than Chapelle from the same stable, evn a touch of fennel and liquorice, a welcome gourmet character in this lean-styled vintage, plenty of spice and savoury black fruits, with salinity on the finish. Quite a different expression than recent vintages with lower alcohol and slim frame, but this delivers estate signature. 6.3% press, 31% new oak., harvest September 17 to October 4, 26hl/h yield.

Inside Bordeaux

Deep garnet-purple colored. Skips out with cheery notes of fresh blackberries and black raspberries, giving way to hints of rose bud tea, cardamom, and fallen leaves. The light to medium-bodied palate is satiny and light on its feet, featuring red berry layers and chalky tannins, finishing lifted.

More intense and deeply coloured than the Chapelle, this is inky, cassis, spiced bilberry, with a slow build tannnic architecture, and the most gorgeous slate scrape. Exceptional vintage of this wine, one to savour.

The 2022 Le Clarence de Haut-Brion is composed of 62.1% Merlot, 21.9% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14.5% Cabernet Franc, and 1.5% Petit Verdot aging in 20% new oak. Deep garnet-purple in color, it needs a little coaxing to bring out scents of mulberries, plum preserves, and blackberry compote, plus hints of fallen leaves, Sichuan pepper, and dusty soil. The medium to full-bodied palate is bright and breezy, delivering crunchy black fruits and rounded tannins, finishing with impressive freshness.

Ruby violet in colour, and the angular tannins found during En Primeur have softened and sculpted over ageing. There is something thoroughly irresistable about this more classic style of the Haut-Brion stablen with black fruits that are fully ripe, bright and vibrant, but still with a feeling of solidity and depth. Even with higher levels of Merlot in the blend than usual, this is structured, and still-tight tannins that need a good three or four years before opening (which still makes it an early drinker within this universe of wines). 28% new oak, Jean-Philippe Delmas estate director.

Concentrated spice notes, seductive texture of slate and satin, with aromatics of incense, rosemary, cut herbs. These are big tannins that are fully ripe, cradling the blackberry fruit and christmas pudding spice. A serious wine but one with a smile on its face.

Le Clarence de Haut-Brion 2018 is deep garnet purple in color. It offers notes of cassis, juicy plums, and clove oil, with touches of pencil shavings and roses. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a soft texture and plenty of youthful fruit, finishing with a skip in its step.

A bit more depth than La Chapelle, fine oak, ripe sweet fruit, leather, tobacco. Dense but rounded palate fresh and vigorous with dry spices, tobacco and a long pure finish.

Medium to deep garnet-brick in color, the 2014 Le Clarence de Haut-Brion delivers notes of sauteed herbs and black peppercorns opening out to a core of plum preserves and mossy tree bark with a waft of graphite. The medium-bodied palate has bags of energy and freshness, with a soft, well-played texture and lifted finish.

Le Clarence de Haut-Brion 2013 is medium garnet in color, with a touch of brick. It features notes of prunes, fig cake, and dried cranberries, with hints of sauteed herbs and new leather. The light to medium-bodied palate is refreshing and chewy, with very little remaining fruit yet with an appealing savoriness.

More abrupt in its tannic structure than La Chapelle, layered with rosemary, campfire, tar, smoke and spice. Needs a few more years and feels a little stubborn, certainly compared to the seductive depths of the main Haut-Brion wine.
