Saint-Emilion Grand Cru

Medium intensity ruby, redcurrant and cedar, highly perfumed aromatics, this starts off with an attractive kick of fresh fruits that are vivid, not stalky, but certainly high acidity with a mouthwatering signoff, balanced by sweet oak. Careful winemaking on display, slate texture tannins, no need to wait too long but there are hidden depths that will become more evident over ageing. Harvest 24 September to 8 October. Same family since 1998, Jean-Charles Sioen owner and estate director, living between Belgium and St Emilion. Cabernet Franc aged in amphora. Organic certified.

Inside Bordeaux

Deep garnet-purple in color. Notes of bay leaves and Bing cherries jump from the glass with underlying suggestions of dusty soil and mossy tree bark. The medium-bodied palate delivers plush tannins and plenty of freshness to support the vibrant red fruit, finishing earthy.

The 2023 La Marzelle is deep garnet-purple in color. Broody cedar and tar notes soon open out to reveal a compelling core of plum preserves, Morello cherries, and pencil shavings with a touch of bay leaf. The medium to full-bodied palate is chock full of juicy black fruits with a velvety texture and lovely freshness, finishing earthy. This is impressive!

Chalky tannins, with very clear rose petal aromatics, plenty of rich deep black fruits, finessed tannins, kick of acidity, flash of heat. No external consultant, Sebastien du Moulin technical director. Certified organic but works biodynamics. gravel, sand and clay, pretty classic Pomerol terroir in the Figeac sector. 9-30 September for harvest. Belgian owners Sioen family. 

Ruby red in colour, full extraction for the vintage, with coffee grounds and grilled cedar oak notes. Black fruits give impact, but overall the tannins are feeling pretty angular. Single point downgrade from primeur.

Understated but impressive, lovely depth of fruit, cocoa powder, chalky tannins, a little austere and serious but it works, with supple tannins, with nuance and waves of berry fruit flavour. Jacqueline Sioen owner at this 17ha estate, 35hl/ha yield, Marc Quertinier consultant.

Smoky campfire notes, this unfurls slowly, and with purpose. Poised and drawn out, this has some punch through the mid palate, touches of dried fruits that show the heat of the summer but plenty to sink into and enjoy, with smoky cedar and roasted coffee bean alongside the raspberry and cassis. Tasted twice.
