Ripe strawberry and raspberry fruits, lovely salinity on the finish. Stéphane Derenoncourt consultant since 2008 at an estate that has 18ha of Merlot in a single block, making it one of the bigger Pomerol estates, on the Libourne side of the appellation. They are experimenting with whole cluster vinification.

Inside Bordeaux

The 2023 Moulinet is deep garnet-purple in color. The nose is a little shut down to start, opening out to notes of red plums, kirsch, and violets followed by a core of blackberries and fragrant soil. The medium-bodied palate has compelling energy, with lightly chewy tannins and a vibrant burst of red berries on the finish. Nice. The blend is 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, with a limited infusion of stems for 1-2 days.

The 2022 Moulinet, 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, is deep garnet-purple in color. Scents of prunes, boysenberry preserves, and Christmas cake jump from the glass, with hints of tobacco leaf and forest floor. The medium to full-bodied palate delivers muscular black fruit with a chewy texture and soft acidity, finishing a tad rugged.

Sweet berry fruit on the attack, with an undercurrent of smoke and tar. Well-handled, not as intense through the mid-palate as the past few years but this has fruit, and is a good choice in the vintage, with Pomerol character.

Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2020 Moulinet slowly opens out on the nose to offer bright, youthful notes of black and red cherries, plum preserves, and fertile loam, plus hints of clove oil and cracked black pepper. The medium to full-bodied palate is filled with vibrant, crunchy black fruits, supported by a lively line of freshness and soft, well-managed tannins, finishing earthy.

Less successful than many in Pomerol in the exceptional 2010 vintage, where the high level of grilled oak closes down the fruit. It may open over the next few years, but this feels unresolved even now. Owned by Nathalie Moueix with her daughter Marie-José until 2016.

Restrained opening, muscular, flashes of heat, plenty of dark fruits riven with fennel and star anise, a little foursquare in its tannic grip, an unusual 2009. This estate was in the hands of the Moueix family at the time - Nathalie Moueix with her daughter Marie-José.

Sweet blackberry and raspberry fruit, this is charming, with classsic liquorice and black truffle of aged Pomerol, an enjoyable wine that still delivers juicy red fruits. These are classic, full of unfussy pleasure, well balanced, sums up so much of 2005's classical pleasure.
