Deep garnet-purple in color. Skips out with bright notes of black raspberries, red currant jelly, and dried roses, followed by hints of powdered cinnamon and fertile loam. The light to medium-bodied palate is elegant and soft-spoken with approachable tannins and well-knit freshness, finishing fragrant.

Medium intensity colour, a ton of grip, juicy blackberry fruits, along with wild strawberries and pomegranate, sage and fennel;, very easy to drink, but with plenty of personality, this is a 2nd wine to look out for. Inside Bordeaux

The 2022 Phelan Segur is made from 56% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot, with a yield of 28 hl/ha. Deep garnet-purple in color, it charges out with rambunctious notes of kirsch, black cherries, boysenberry preserves, and garrigue, followed by suggestions of lilacs, Sichuan pepper, and cinnamon stick. The medium to full-bodied palate is laden with juicy black fruit and red berry sparks, supported by firm, grainy tannins and wonderful freshness, leading to a long and spicy finish on this very pretty wine. pH 3.8, TPI 96.

Delivering, as it so often does, richly textured, concentrated and powerful black fruits, a sterling example of the 2020 vintage in St Estèphe, turmeric, crayon and smoked earth notes, lime blossom and pomegranate adding texture and complexity, great stuff. Yields 40hl/ha, harvest September 16 through to October 1, finishing around 10 days earlier than the past two years. Consultants Michel Rolland and Julien Viaud. First vintage with Petit Verdot included in the main wine, from vines planted in 2013.

A ton of complexity is immediately apparent from the first time you wave your nose over the glass, from layers of black fruits to freshly grated nutmeg. On the palate, we are almost in Christmas cake territory, with plump juicy fruits, spiced liquorice, black pepper and plenty of concentration. This is a brilliant wine, confident tannins, well delivered, will be ready to drink in four or five years, but will age for decades. The 2018 Phelan Segur is deep garnet-purple in color. It leaps with scents of fresh blackcurrants, warm plums, and clove oil, plus suggestions of pencil lead, cedar, and wild sage, with a waft of crushed rocks. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has sturdy, grainy tannins and a lively line supporting muscular black fruits, finishing with an herbal lift.

Beautiful texture and grip right from the first moment, showcasing why this is one of the best estates in the appellation. It's a thoroughly St Estephe mix of power, freshness and fruit, with bilberry, cassis and blueberry dominant, clearly a vintage that was ripe but not over-ripe, showcasing eucalyptus and mint edges. Has architecture and chracter, and will age for a good few decades from here. Harvest September 29 to October 14.

The 2013 Phelan Segur has a medium garnet color, with a touch of brick. It offers meagre notes of dried herbs, pencil lead, and tobacco leaf, with a core of dried cranberries and fig paste. The light to medium-bodied palate is a little thin and green, with chewy tannins and an herbs-laced finish.

Mouth: Medium acid, high tannins, medium fruit concentration, lovely fruit on mid-palate, finish is masked by still quite rough tannins. It needs time!

Sommelier

Rødlilla farge. Dufter av klassisk bdx, mørke bær, solbær, tørt løv, bly, peppernoter, hint av anis, skogbunn og lær. Fin og frisk syre med noe avslipte tanniner. Noe utviklet stil. Holder nok noen år til. God konsentrasjon med middels pluss lengde.

Ripe blackberry fruits, with some powerful tannins and a ton of sandalwood and cedar oak. More exuberant than the sculpted wines that Phelan has been making in recent years, this is fully in the spirit of a ripe 2009, enjoyable and full of personality, a little overworked. 50% new oak for ageing, Michel Rolland consultant.
