Brilliant Poyferré, deep ruby colour, setting the scene for ink, campfire, espresso, mint, cassis and damson. Concentrated but with a delicious balance, this feels effortless and is truly a wine for Bordeaux lovers to seek out. Harvest September 14 to October 5. 80% new oak, 52hl/h yields, biggest since 2004, with more 1st wine than usual because the old Cabernet Sauvignon plots gave quality and quantity (after three low quantity years). Alix Combes new vineyard manager, replacing long time manager Bruno Clenet.

Inside Bordeaux

The 2023 Leoville Poyferre is deep garnet-purple in color. Notes of cedar chest and cracked black pepper open out to a core of juicy plums and fresh blackcurrants followed by hints of Provence herbs, lavender, and mossy tree bark. The medium-bodied palate delivers compelling tension with a firm, fine-grained texture and pure black berry flavors, finishing on a floral note. The blend is 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot, with pH 3.68 and TPI 76.

Deep garnet-purple in color. Needs a little swirling to coax out notes of fresh black and red currants and pencil shavings, giving way to nuances of iris, black olives, and damp soil. The light to medium-bodied palate delivers a sturdy structure of firm, grainy tannins and plenty of freshness to match the muscular black and red fruit flavors, finishing with good length if a little grippy.

A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot, the 2021 Leoville Poyferre has a deep garnet-purple color. Notes of blackberries, warm cassis, and kirsch jump from the glass, opening out to an undercurrent of fragrant soil, charcoal, and cinnamon stick. The medium-bodied palate delivers an impressive intensity of vivacious red and black berry flavors, with a fine-grained texture and plenty of freshness, finishing with great length and a compelling perfume.

Amatør

The 2019 Leoville Poyferre is composed of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet-purple in color, it charges out of the glass with bold notions of baked black plums and boysenberry preserves leading to notions of cassis, cedar chest, and menthol. The medium to full-bodied palate is light on its feet, with nuanced black fruits and plush tannins, finishing long with a skip in its step.

Composed of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc, the 2018 Leoville Poyferre was aged in 80% new oak barriques. Deep garnet-purple colored, it barrels out of the glass with bold notes of prunes, baked black currants and stewed blackberries, plus hints of Chinese five spice, iron ore and wood smoke with a touch of rose oil. Full-bodied, firm, and grainy in the mouth, it features bags of savory and mineral layers among the concentrated, opulent black fruit preserves flavors, finishing with fantastic persistence. 

Smoky aromatics, as is often the case in the lighter vintages at this estate, as the oak regime becomes more apparen. Rather than being intrusive, it adds an enticing feeling of glamour, and the silky texture of the fruit is immediately apparant, as are the high levels of juicy blue fruits. Chocolate shavings liqourice and fresh mint leaf. The frost that affected so many estates in 2017 had no impact here, and the yields reached a full 52hl/h. Last vintage under Didier Cuvelier. You can wait, but there is plenty to enjoy about this vintage even at this early stage. 80% new oak.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2016 Leoville Poyferre is a little shut down at first, slowly yielding scents of warm cassis, plum preserves, and black raspberries, plus hints of tar, licorice, and fragrant earth. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is rich and densely laden with seductive black fruits, supported by firm, rounded tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing long and incredibly pure. This is still so young in color and evolution - amazing!

Rød frukt, røde bær, god syre, perfekt tanninstruktur mtp lagringspotensialet. Fin balanse mellom tanniner og syren, nærmest en «dans» dem i mellom. 

I helhet er dette en kompleks vin, som får frem mye av det jeg ser etter i en Bordeaux. Derimot, så plukket jeg opp en god del alkohol, noe som trekker litt ned.

Cassis and raspberry fruits, smoked and grilled oak notes, this is highly moreish, a little more savoury in its Cabernet Sauvignon expression than you often find at Poyferré, with raspberry leaf, graphite, undergrowth and baked earth. The tannins remain a little angular, and I suggest another few years in bottle. 80% new oak, harvest October 1 to 14.

Kirsebær, sedertre, paprika og pepper. Trenger fortsatt tid. 

Poyferré keeps its generous spirit at 10 years old and has a lovely rich body with raspberry coulis, blackberry and density through the mid palate. The oak majors on grilled cedar and almond, a little dominant and closes things down on the close of play, not quite smoothed out yet suggesting that although you can begin drinking now, it will benefit from another few years in bottle. Harvest October 8 to 19. 80% new oak.

The 2011 Leoville Poyferre is medium to deep garnet-purple in color. It gives up expressive notions of blackcurrants, black plums, and kirsch with touches of damp soil, dried Provence herbs, lavender, and tobacco. Medium-bodied, delicately fruited, and packing bold freshness, it has a chewy backbone and earth-laced finish.

Deep colour, luscious and powerful, has the push and pull of a truly great wine, where you are not exactly sure where you will land but you are fully along for the ride. Brilliant quality, precision, smoke, liquorice, cigar box, cassis, mint leaf etching, rippled with muscle, more Pauillac than St Julien in the 2010 vintage, with decades ahead of it. Great stuff, easily one of the wines of the tasting. 80% new oak. Harvest October 1 to 18.

A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot, the 2008 Leoville Poyferre has a deep garnet-brick color. It comes tearing out of the glass with ready-to-go notes of blackcurrant cordial, stewed plums, and Indian spices, leading to touches of dried sage, cigar box, and mossy tree bark. The medium-bodied palate displays a sweet spot between evolved/tertiary characteristics and plenty of vibrant black fruits, framed by lightly chewy tannins and bags of freshness, finishing on a lingering mineral note.

Strong coffee grains on the nose, like you are standing in front of a percolating machine. I am a big fan of 2007s right now, there are so many that are drinking perfectly, but the coffee and grilled cedar notes here are a little intrusive, showing clear oak (and vintage) influence, although unquestionably it lends a welcoming pull-up-a-chair feel right now, and will lessen over the next five years as it evolves further in bottle. On the palate the coffee blends in with brambled fruits that are ripe and generous but still have tar and eucalyptus on the finish. Overall a great wine to drink with a few hours in a carafe, but you will find more naturally expressive St Juliens in this vintage. 80% new oak, harvest September 26 to October 10.

Great quality, classic but a little less generous at this point in its life than the 2005 that precedes it. Liqourice root, raspberry leaf, smoked earth, cassis, bilberry, all those tight smooth-skinned high-acidity autumn fruits. Great potential, and sings its St Julien tune to perfection but remains a little austere right now. Harvest September 21 to October 7. 80% new oak.

Medium brick in color, the 2005 Leoville Poyferre sails out of the glass with fragrant notes of creme de cassis, Morello cherries, and fruitcake with hints of dried roses, star anise, cigar box, and dried mint plus a hint of cast-iron pan. Medium-bodied, the palate delivers a fantastic backbone of firm, fine-grained tannins and racy acidity supporting the layer upon layer of perfumed black fruits, finishing long and mineral-tinged.

A blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot, the 2004 Leoville Poyferre is deep garnet-brick in color. It leaps from the glass with notes of rusty nails, unsmoked cigars, and leather, leading to a core of dried cranberries and redcurrants, plus a waft of bay leaves. The medium-bodied palate has a refreshing backbone and chewy tannins, with mature, savory flavors and a ferrous finish.

The 2003 Leoville Poyferre is medium garnet with a touch of brick. It sashays out of the glass with a beautiful nose of kirsch, raspberry pie, Black Forest cake, and chocolate box plus hints of wilted rose petals, garrigue, fertile loam, and cigar box. Medium to full-bodied, firm, chewy, and savory in the mouth, it has a long, earth-laced finish.

The 2002 Leoville Poyferre is medium garnet with a touch of brick. It has quite an earthy / leathery nose showing a good amount of evolution, with a core of prunes and blackcurrant pastilles plus hints of fallen leaves, dried herbs, tobacco, and camphor. Medium-bodied, the palate is coated with mint-laced black fruit preserves, framed by a light grip of chewy tannins and appealing freshness, finishing with a minty kick.

A blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot, the 2001 Leoville Poyferre has a deep garnet-brick color. It starts with notions of sweaty leather and iodine, before opening out to underlying hints of kirsch, prunes, and dusty soil, plus a touch of dried Mediterranean herbs. Light to medium-bodied, the palate is chewy and savory, with just enough acidity and a rusticity on the finish.

Medium garnet-brick in color, the 2000 Leoville Poyferre rocks up with bold notions of cigar box, baked cherries, dried mulberries, and creme de cassis with hints of eucalyptus, Chinese five spice, sandalwood, and leather. Medium-bodied, with lovely freshness and spicy layers defining the mature palate, it has a lightly chewy texture and long savory finish.

Delvis oksidert men fortjener en mention.
