Deep garnet-purple in color. Needs a little swirling to coax out notes of fresh black and red currants and pencil shavings, giving way to nuances of iris, black olives, and damp soil. The light to medium-bodied palate delivers a sturdy structure of firm, grainy tannins and plenty of freshness to match the muscular black and red fruit flavors, finishing with good length if a little grippy.

Impressive texture, slate wrapped in silky tannins, with real depth of flavour, black cherry and damson fruit, no dip through the mid palate, and a long finish. Inside Bordeaux

Brilliant Poyferré, deep ruby colour, setting the scene for ink, campfire, espresso, mint, cassis and damson. Concentrated but with a delicious balance, this feels effortless and is truly a wine for Bordeaux lovers to seek out. Harvest September 14 to October 5. 80% new oak, 52hl/h yields, biggest since 2004, with more 1st wine than usual because the old Cabernet Sauvignon plots gave quality and quantity (after three low quantity years). Alix Combes new vineyard manager, replacing long time manager Bruno Clenet.

The 2019 Leoville Poyferre is composed of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet-purple in color, it charges out of the glass with bold notions of baked black plums and boysenberry preserves leading to notions of cassis, cedar chest, and menthol. The medium to full-bodied palate is light on its feet, with nuanced black fruits and plush tannins, finishing long with a skip in its step.

Steike god Saint-Julien! Røde bær, solbær, bjørnebær, plommer, lær, tobakk, grafitt, fioler, noe umami-aktig og pukk på en nydelig og kompleks nese. I munnen er vinen akkurat som man forventer av appellasjonen. Kraftfull, men syren balanserer ut vinen slik at den ikke blir tung, mer som elegant muskuløs. Samtidig er den både sjarmerende og leken, og innehar en uanstrengt og nærmest gudegitt balanse. Jeg lar resten av flaskene ligge noen år til, men dette er en stor, stor vin in the making!

The 2017 Leoville Poyferre is medium to deep garnet-purple colored. It offers up notions of baked plums and cassis with cedar chest, pencil lead, bay leaves, and smoked meats in the background. Medium-bodied, the palate delivers generous fruit and firm, chewy tannins with soft acidity and a firm, grippy finish.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2016 Leoville Poyferre is a little shut down at first, slowly yielding scents of warm cassis, plum preserves, and black raspberries, plus hints of tar, licorice, and fragrant earth. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is rich and densely laden with seductive black fruits, supported by firm, rounded tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing long and incredibly pure. This is still so young in color and evolution - amazing!

Right off the first nose, this is young, generous, powerful yet subtle, nuanced, full of grace and power. Raspberry and blackberry fruits feel open and generous right now, so you could take advantage of this window and drink it over the next year or so with a carafe, but those tannins are menacing and hinting that pretty soon the fist will close around the fruit. Smoked cedar fills out the mid palate. Excellent. Harvest September 24 to October 10. 80% new oak.

Cassis and raspberry fruits, smoked and grilled oak notes, this is highly moreish, a little more savoury in its Cabernet Sauvignon expression than you often find at Poyferré, with raspberry leaf, graphite, undergrowth and baked earth. The tannins remain a little angular, and I suggest another few years in bottle. 80% new oak, harvest October 1 to 14.

Grilled cedar, touch of campfire, raspberry and black cherry fruit, this has some form and appeal, is ready to drink. Retains tannic grip on the finish also. 80% new oak. Harvest October 2 to 10.

Poyferré keeps its generous spirit at 10 years old and has a lovely rich body with raspberry coulis, blackberry and density through the mid palate. The oak majors on grilled cedar and almond, a little dominant and closes things down on the close of play, not quite smoothed out yet suggesting that although you can begin drinking now, it will benefit from another few years in bottle. Harvest October 8 to 19. 80% new oak.

There is an austerity to the tannins and the wine needs a few more years in bottle to really settle down, although you can begin now with a good long carafe. Inky ruby in colour, dark berry fruits infused with cappucino and smoked cedar notes, as it opens you really feel the benefit of Poyferré's confidence with extraction, as this avoids some of the issues of 2011s that can feel underwhelmingly subdued and manages to deliver a creamy texture. Same score as when tasted at the 10 years on point in early 2021. Harvest September 19 to October 1. 80% new oak.

Deep colour, luscious and powerful, has the push and pull of a truly great wine, where you are not exactly sure where you will land but you are fully along for the ride. Brilliant quality, precision, smoke, liquorice, cigar box, cassis, mint leaf etching, rippled with muscle, more Pauillac than St Julien in the 2010 vintage, with decades ahead of it. Great stuff, easily one of the wines of the tasting. 80% new oak. Harvest October 1 to 18.

En veldig fruktdreven nese, overraskende mørk i fargen, pene solbær og jordbær toner. Lys cola og lys sjokolade. 

Veldig mye frukt på smak, hvor de røde bringebærene og røde jordbærene kommer pent frem. Pen syre og høy konsentrasjon. Fortsatt en veldig ung vin.

A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot, the 2008 Leoville Poyferre has a deep garnet-brick color. It comes tearing out of the glass with ready-to-go notes of blackcurrant cordial, stewed plums, and Indian spices, leading to touches of dried sage, cigar box, and mossy tree bark. The medium-bodied palate displays a sweet spot between evolved/tertiary characteristics and plenty of vibrant black fruits, framed by lightly chewy tannins and bags of freshness, finishing on a lingering mineral note.

Strong coffee grains on the nose, like you are standing in front of a percolating machine. I am a big fan of 2007s right now, there are so many that are drinking perfectly, but the coffee and grilled cedar notes here are a little intrusive, showing clear oak (and vintage) influence, although unquestionably it lends a welcoming pull-up-a-chair feel right now, and will lessen over the next five years as it evolves further in bottle. On the palate the coffee blends in with brambled fruits that are ripe and generous but still have tar and eucalyptus on the finish. Overall a great wine to drink with a few hours in a carafe, but you will find more naturally expressive St Juliens in this vintage. 80% new oak, harvest September 26 to October 10.

Great quality, classic but a little less generous at this point in its life than the 2005 that precedes it. Liqourice root, raspberry leaf, smoked earth, cassis, bilberry, all those tight smooth-skinned high-acidity autumn fruits. Great potential, and sings its St Julien tune to perfection but remains a little austere right now. Harvest September 21 to October 7. 80% new oak.

Medium brick in color, the 2005 Leoville Poyferre sails out of the glass with fragrant notes of creme de cassis, Morello cherries, and fruitcake with hints of dried roses, star anise, cigar box, and dried mint plus a hint of cast-iron pan. Medium-bodied, the palate delivers a fantastic backbone of firm, fine-grained tannins and racy acidity supporting the layer upon layer of perfumed black fruits, finishing long and mineral-tinged.

A blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot, the 2004 Leoville Poyferre is deep garnet-brick in color. It leaps from the glass with notes of rusty nails, unsmoked cigars, and leather, leading to a core of dried cranberries and redcurrants, plus a waft of bay leaves. The medium-bodied palate has a refreshing backbone and chewy tannins, with mature, savory flavors and a ferrous finish.

A Cabernet Sauvignon dominant blend, this is young, still knittted down but extremely charming, and again very classic, more so than you might expect from a vintage with this heat during the growing season. Plenty of cassis, bilberry, blackberry fruits that are ripe but not overly so, still with texture and juice. Suprisingly fresh with tannic hold along with grilled cedar, cinammon and turmeric spice, not at all what you might expect, and I'm going to call this as one of the best examples of the 2003 vintage that you will be able to find - and clearly having a moment, as this is an upscore from the last time I tasted it. One to open and to enjoy over the next five years but no great rush. Harvest 11 September to 26 September. 80% new oak.

Grilled spice notes dominate on the opening beats of this wine, and the tannins remain very much in play, not constricting but playing a big role in the mouthfeel. There is a lovely classicisim to this vintage at Poyferré, with raspberry fruits, touches of hedgrow and bracken giving a wash of acidity, some earthy notes and again the balance that you look for in a classified St Julien. 80% new oak.

A blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot, the 2001 Leoville Poyferre has a deep garnet-brick color. It starts with notions of sweaty leather and iodine, before opening out to underlying hints of kirsch, prunes, and dusty soil, plus a touch of dried Mediterranean herbs. Light to medium-bodied, the palate is chewy and savory, with just enough acidity and a rusticity on the finish.

Olive tapenade, leather, black tea, liquorice, alongside ripe blackberry fruits that remain generous at 21 years old. There are plenty of fine but firm tannins and after a stubborn start the vintage is finally starting to relax and open up. As you settle in, the sweet fruit falls away to allow a complex addition of licking salinity with crushed stones and slate texture, with remnants of the toasted oak that it was aged in giving a smoky seductive finish. Ready to drink with a short decanting. Harvest September 26 to October 10. This was Isabelle Davin's first year as technical director, with Michel Rolland consultant since 1996. Blending at the end of ageing at the time (through to 2005). 80% new oak.
