Inside Bordeaux

Deep garnet-purple in color. Features notes of fresh blackberries and just-ripe plums with hints of Sichuan pepper, forest floor, and potpourri. The light to medium-bodied palate is bright and breezy with just enough freshness and lightly chewy tannins, finishing savory.

Great quality, and likely to be great value, wine, combining unfussy and fully ripe fruit with supple tannins and a dash of gourmet grilled cocoa bean edging. One to look out for. 3.7ph, Isabelle Danvin winemaker, Julien Viaud consultant, cellar master Didier Thormann. 52hl/h yields, biggest since 2004.

Careful extraction of the rich ripe berry fruits here, with edges of baked plum and raspberry, followed by black pepper, rosemary and underbrush. Intense, marked by the vintage, with confident delivery, and welcome black choclate bitterness on the finish. Harvest September 8 to 28, 20ha.

As during En Primeur, this is a skilfully made slender wine that highlights the savoury character of fruit in 2021 - blueberry, redcurrant, quince, fine tannins, gunsmoke. Harvest September 28 to October 12.

20ha property owned by Cuvelier family of Léoville Poyferré since 1920, here proving that this is a family collection of impressive wines. Lovely texture, bright fruit with clarity and cheerful sappy raspberry and cassis fruits. Harvest September 14 to 30, 35hl/h yield, 25% new oak. Winemaker Isabelle Davin, consultant Michel Rolland.

The 2019 Moulin Riche is composed of 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and 11% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet-purple in color, it opens with notions of chocolate-covered cherries, licorice, and stewed plums, plus hints of fruitcake and spice box. The medium-bodied palate is chewy and just a touch thin, with appealing brightness on the minerally finish.

The 2018 Moulin Riche is deep garnet purple in color. It needs coaxing to reveal notes of warm cassis, plum preserves, and cedar, plus wafts of cloves and unsmoked cigars. Medium-bodied, it is elegant and refreshing in the mouth but just a tad lean and short.

The 2012 Moulin Riche is medium to deep garnet colored. It flows out with notes of blackberry preserves, blackcurrant cordial, and dark chocolate with touches of star anise and unsmoked cigars. The medium-bodied palate is soft and juicy, delivering youthful black fruits and a peppery lift on the finish. Not overly complicated, but it is holding up well!
